TGS 09: Reich Impressions

Like Duke Nukem - only with futuristic nazis and without the Duke.

TGS 09: Reich Impressions

At UTV's room in the TGS we were shown one of their upcoming games that thankfully wasn't a crappy casual game shamelessly cashing in on some local custom or sport. It was a first person shooter that went by the name of Reich and by the looks of it, is an all out tribute to old school shooters that's high on action and low on plot.

Reich takes place in an alternate universe where Germany wins World War II and in true Wolfenstein fashion they began dabbling in the occult. This off course leads to some highly unpleasant stuff and our protagonist steps in to save the day.

The game's USP like I mentioned earlier is its balls-out action so if you’re looking for a deep story and fleshed out characters here, you’ll be sorely disappointed. The build we got to see at TGS '09 looked a bit low res in its textures and even the models seemed poorly detailed but the game made up for that in leaps and bounds with environmental destruction.

Shoot down an air ship and it crashes down taking out nearby buildings. We were told these won't be scripted events, which means shooting down the ship would lead to different kinds of destruction every single time. Doors, walls and other structures were blown in reckless abandon as well during the course of our demo thanks to Nvidia's PhysX tech and the Unreal 3 engine.

The game's high on gore as well and shooting enemies at different angles resulted in arms, legs and heads blown off in glorious slow motion. Oh yeah, Reich will boast of a slow motion mechanic as well so you can marvel at those bloody chunky head-shots in slow mo. Somehow during the course of the game you also acquire BioShock-esque TK (telekinesis) powers that'll allow you to toss debris and enemies all over the place (think Psi-Ops on some serious crack).

On the multiplayer side of things we didn't get too many details except that there would be a multiplayer mode and the game’s wanton destruction would make its way in there as well. One thing that seemed interesting in the multiplayer demonstration was that though the bodies never disappeared (and there were a lot of bodies), we didn't see any drop in framerate.

When asked for a release date we were told 2010 for the Xbox360 and the PS3 with a PC release date a few months after the console version.
