Things We WANT But Don't NEED

For those of us with ambitious goals and frivolous tastes, take a look at some of these items that I know you'll want, but definitely don't need.

Recession be damned! Just because we can’t afford something, that doesn’t curtail us from wanting it anyhow, irrespective of how useful it’ll make our lives seem, or not. We usually want something we can’t have and we often have something that we didn’t necessarily want. But all that aside, there are quite a few things that would be an absolutely futile waste of hard earned cash and will serve no other purpose than to tap our inner child or ego on the shoulder and say, ‘Bet you’re real glad you didn’t buy that front door you needed for your home huh?”. So here’s my list of outrageous gadgets that I know I can’t have, but I sure as hell want. They’ll serve me no practical purpose at all, but if I could afford ‘em, I’d have ‘em. Spyder II GX Laser I’ve always been fascinated with lasers ever since I was privy to the Star Wars movies back in the good ol' 1980’s. The technology has come a long way since then and while we may be getting closer and closer to their development as weapons, for now, laser technology can be used from anything like a remote pointer for a presenter at a conference or as a precision instrument for surgeries. Of course one can also purchase those cheap red lasers available on the streets for a couple of hundred rupees or lesser that has pretty good range but the Spyder II is a laser of a different color. This high intensity laser beam falls under the class IIIb laser category and that’s really saying something. It’s no bigger than a flashlight, but it’s green beam is powerful enough to ignite a matchstick in couple of seconds and burn holes through thin plastic. While it can’t be classified as a weapon it’ll give your buddies one hell of a ‘jhatka’ if focused on any part of the body. Can you imagine the craziness one could come up with while concocting ideas on how to use this? By the way it’ll set you back and easy Rs. 86,100 give or take a couple of hundred. Radio Controlled Cars I grew up in a time when the RC i.e. Radio Controlled vehicles were all the rage, especially in the gulf countries. They were more than just cool toys. They gave us kids an alternative to driving. Hey, if daddy don’t buy you a car of your own, this is the next best thing. As a guy all we could think about was cars and bikes and cool toys and they didn’t get cooler than RC cars. Very recently we had a chance to see some of the latest models from HPI Racing in action (click here to watch the video) and it brought back a flood of memories. Of course things are a whole lot more sophisticated these days with combustion engines and electric engines that can easily hit speeds of a 100km. How cool is that?! Apart from just speed, the cars are fully customizable and can be upgraded and tinkered with just like you would a normal life sized vehicle. They’re also designed for various purposes – drifting, speed and even off-roading. Again, it’s not a cheap hobby as enthusiasts will tell you, as cars range from Rs. 30,000 up to a Lakh plus. But they’re absolutely brilliant in construction and delivery and all I can say is – GIMMEEE!!!! |
