Tokyo Game Show 2006

Even though E3 may not be happening anymore, there isn’t a shortage of trade-fairs where developers and publishers can showcase their upcoming products. One such trade fair recently took place at Japan recently and even though we didn’t get a chance to be there, we got the lowdown on some of the interesting stuff that went down at the Tokyo Game Show this year.

Microsoft announces HD DVD player
To boost sales for their next generation console in the land of the Rising Sun, Microsoft will be launching an HD DVD player, which by the way will be sold externally. This player will cost 19,800 yen (Rs 10,000 approximately) bringing the combined cost of the basic Xbox 360 and the HD-DVD player to nearly the same price as that of the PlayStation 3 in Japan.

New content for Xbox Live
Besides offering consumers HD DVD drives, Microsoft is also pushing their online service, Xbox Live by offering a multitude of new files that can be downloaded after the 20th of September. Expect game demos, a new arcade title every week and videos of the following games:

  • Call of Duty 3
  • Dead or Alive Xtreme 2
  • Forza Motorsport 2
  • Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
  • Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom
  • Need for Speed Carbon
  • Project Sylpheed
  • Shrek 3
  • Viva Piñata
  • Battlestations: Midway
  • Eragon

Update: Microsoft also released a demo for Monolith’s upcoming shooter F.E.A.R. (yeah, the same one you played on the PC) and it’s available right now at the Live Marketplace.
