Brain-dead, squishy, and loads of fun!

Tribute to Cannon Fodder in Games - Zombies

Slow, fast moving, twitchy, barely held together, chocolate, strawberry - zombies come in all flavors, but what unites them is the 'squish' each and every one of them make when they meet the butt of your shotgun. If you've been gaming for a while, chances are you've run across this brain-munching breed of cannon fodder at some point. In this article, we pay our respects to the risen dead who hunger for our flesh, and we so lovingly slay. Here's a list of games that we'd like to commemorate for the zombie slaying joy they've bestowed upon us...

Released: 2008

Slaying hordes of fast moving zombies in co-op with three friends - what more could you ask for? Left4Dead's zombies were swift and deadly, but no match for your assault rifle, and a well-coordinated team. If you'd falter though, the game's special 'infected' would make a zombie meal out of you in no time.

Released: 2009

Considered a Left4Dead clone by many, the low-budget Killing Floor allowed you to face a zombie outbreak in London, where you and up to five friends could take on the undead. The game featured an auto-bullet-time-esque 'ZEDtime' and an unlock system that set it apart from the aforementioned.

Released: 2006

This 2006 console hit put you in a massive shopping complex with a gazillion zombies to slay, and even more ways to do so. You could use almost anything from the gameworld to kill zombies, but my favorite was to wield a Katana from a weapons store in the mall, that let you slice the limbs off zombies like a hot knife through undead-butter.

g_161622_re.jpgResident Evil series
Released: 1996

The Resident Evil series has been the benchmark for survival horror games for more than a decade now, and for good reason. The lack of ammo and claustrophobic style of the game enhanced the feeling of dread induced by the truckload of T-virus infected mutant zombies thrown at you.

g_161632_thief.jpgThief series
Released: 1998

There's nothing like getting freaked out by an re-animated corpse, while you're skulking around in shadows, hiding from powerful Hammerites. While the Thief series' main enemy type wasn't zombies, the ones thrown in there would creep up on you when you least expect it, and were terribly hard to kill, making them a real threat. The Haunted Cathedral level of the first game was one of the scariest levels I've every played!

g_161642_callofduty.jpgCall of Duty: World at War
Released: 2008

The bonus mode in World at War called Nazi Zombies, holed you up in a two story shack, and threw loads of zombies at you, as your co-op buddy and you'd fend them off wave after wave. To slow these undead Nazis off, you could board up windows and block doors to gain those extra few seconds you'd need to pop them in the head with your trusty pistol.

g_161652_houseofthedead.jpgThe House of the Dead series
Released: 1996

The House of the Dead series is famous for its arcade machines, where you and a mate could wield a gun each to point and shoot your way through many Virtua-Cop styled levels, populated with loads of undead creatures of all shapes and sizes. The series made it to PCs later on, becoming one of the most popular brain-dead point and shooters out there.

Released: 2008

One of the most popular spin-off of tower-defense styled games, Plants versus Zombies allowed you to place different kinds of plants which would kill zombies by shooting stuff at them. Not the most logical game, but it's really addictive and loads of fun! Also, every now and then you'd come across a zombie that looked like Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller' avatar - it always makes me smile and brings a tear to my eye. R.I.P. MJ.

Released: 2005

The time traveling console FPS let you play an entire level based in a spoof zombie infested area, where you'd take on zombies as they'd vocalize their craving to munch on your brains in the most hilarious manner. Lets hope that the upcoming 'TimeSplitters 4' will have a zombie level too!
