Even though Grand Theft Auto III shoved the free roaming genre into the limelight there are tons of other franchises that have been doing their bit as well and last year’s Saint’s Row 2 showed us that you don’t have to go the ultra-realistic way to have fun. Either way, whatever your choice be there are a few interesting free roaming games lined up for 2009 and here be they, served on a platter just for you. Alan Wake (Xbox360 PC) What’s it about: Alan Wake will put players in the boots of a writer called Alan Wake who’s desperately trying to overcome his writer’s block in the idyllic yet spooky town of Bright Falls. Over there he not only loses his wife but has to confront his inner demons that may or may not be real. Why it’s gonna rock: Alan Wake is being made by the same people behind the Max Payne series; in fact this game is the reason they’re not working on max Payne 3. Even though the devs have made it very clear this is not going to be your run of the mill action game, we can’t help but be excited by the prospect of a free-roaming survival horror action adventure that boasts of photorealistic visuals. Red Faction: Guerilla (Xbox360 PS3 PC) What’s it about: In Red Faction Guerilla, you’ll liberating Mars from the Earth Defense Force (EDF), the very same organization you considered your allies in Red Faction 1 and 2 (talk about being stabbed in the back). Why it’s gonna rock: Many games promise wanton destruction but Red Faction Guerilla looks like it’ll actually live up to the promise. From some of the gameplay videos we’ve seen, players will be able to take structures apart brick by brick, if they feel like. Combine the game’s free roaming style to this destructive gameplay and you have the recipe for what could be the best game ever made. The Godfather II (Xbox360 PS3 PC) What’s it about: You’re the latest recruit in the Corleone family who takes it upon himself to expand their business across New York, Miami, and Havana. Helping you in this noble endeavor is your team, all of which are skilled in some sort of activity be it safecracking, arsony or just plain mayhem. Why it’s gonna rock: So not only do we have a brand new hand-to-hand combat system and brutal finishers but we also get a brand new bird’s eye view of the business called the Don’s View that’ll allow you to manage your business from an RTS-esque point of view. Add in some multiplayer options that tie in with single player game (and vice versa) and have something that could give heavyweights like GTA and Saint’s Row a run for their money. |
