Top 3 Super Luxury Speakers

It’s Luxury week! Thus I decided to write this from a spa with essential oils being poured ever so slowly all around me, coupled with those elegantly poised scented candles. The setting is perfect to talk about the category we are covering today, and that is high end luxury speakers. A audiophile, boutique speaker set can be one of the most exquisitely designed and also the most meticulously engineered piece of art. Creativity flows freely everywhere-right from the placement and shape of the drivers, to the beautifully carved geometric elements of the cabinet, to the lustrous wood finish that attires the speake in its entirety. All these adjective laden attributes come at a high price, but all things related to luxury do anyways. Here is a list of some of the most elite speaker models, by obscure brands that only specialize with vigorous passion, in building these piece by piece.

Mordaunt Short-Mezzo 6
Rs.1,25,000

One of the most reputed brands in the high end market, these guys are sure known to sport premium pricing, but not without delivering value for all that money spent. the Mezzo 6 is a serious piece of technology, understandably for people who can appreciate the nuances built in. Some of the highlights  include  their ATT (Aspirated Tweeter Technology)  tweeters that bring to the table revolutionary high frequency performance. It has vents for ‘breathing’ ans also is enclosed in such a way that it floats freely in a injection moulded rubber mount. As for the other drivers, two 6 ½” CPC (Continuous Profile Cone) mid/bass drivers are positioned in the aluminum front-baffle. These speakers can render out clearly some of the most minute details in music, and also well recorded music itself is taken to another level. the main job for these towers, or any self respecting floorstanding speaker is to reproduce music the way it was recorded or played. These come close to doing that, they “disappear” when turned on.

Specifications

Design – 2 ½ way
Drivers – 2 x 6.5” CPC (Continuous Profile Cone) mid/bass drivers, 1 x 1” aluminum dome tweeter with ATT
Frequency Response - 38Hz - 22kHz
Input Impedance – 4-8Ohms
Dimensions - 39.4 x 8.7 x 11.0"
Weight – 17.6kgs

AAD by Phil Jones-Silver reference
Rs. 1,32,000

A speaker unit made by a musician, more appropriately a bass player. what can be more kickass than this? we have the flagship model built by Phil jones Company, branded AAD, called the Silver Reference 7. Its classy, its sexy and it luxurious. To get into specifics, we have some superb quality drivers  namely three proprietary 5” Kevlar/Carbon Fiber drivers with a Helical Conductive Tweeter or HCT on the very top. The body itself is very tall, much more than an average floorstander. The tweeter, as AAD claims, can go all the way up to 40kHz without a dip or a rise in the frequency response. This is a flat response, something that is not at all easy for an engineer to achieve. As for lower ends of the spectrum, we have honeycomb bass drivers, which are split over different crossover points to give them their own share of the mids to the lows, while the three little bass ports on the back expel the cabinet’s role in the acoustics.

This model has very good theory in its construction, basically it uses an array of smaller drivers to punch out the lows, rather than one big driver. This ensures a much tighter bass response: the listener can really feel the difference during a detailed upright bass recital, or a twangy funky bass riff is belted through the speakers. The quality of the sound can actually force you to swing to the beats, its an adrenaline rush. The high frequency also performance is are not ignored, they are ‘airy’ and very pleasnt sounding.

Focal DOME 5.1 system

Rs. 46,000

Every speaker list has to have one 5.1 entry, and for today’s luxurious contender roundup we have Focal to do the honours with their 5.1 package simply caclled Dome. And guess what teh shape of the speakers are? yeah they’re domes, which look ultra futuristic due to their clean lustrous finish and brilliantly executed curvaceous contours. The subwoofer is the mother ship, with the satellite speakers analogous to , well, real satellites.

You can choose to wall/ceiling mount or place the satellites on their own stands, but that is an issue as they don’t come packed in every box. The cabinets of the satellites have a little more to them than what meets the eye: a sealed two-way acoustic design with a 4” polyglass bass mid-driver and a 1” TNV inverted aluminum/magnesium dome tweeter. EVen though the small size that makes it looks like PC speakers, these babies can go from 80 Hz to 28 KHz, and this is without the help of the woofer.Inside the sub’s globular exterior sits a down-firing 8” polyglass active-bass woofer that go all the way down to 42Hz and up to 200Hz. the main USP is that even though their diminutive size these these smooth alien ships can blow off any ones mind with their sheer controlled loudness. The bass is tight to the extent of inciting nailbiting, with the high frequencies also being very sparkly and present.
