After the announcement of Microsoft Surface, the Software giants recently showcased a sneak peek at their swanky new mobile operating system, Windows

All you need to know about Windows Phone 8

Windows Phone 7.8

Sadly, the current crop of Windows Phone devices will not get Windows Phone 8. That is a major drawback, but Microsoft is planning an update for the existing devices that will give them the Windows Phone 8 start screen and it’s called Windows Phone 7.8. Windows Phone 8 is a generation shift in technology, which means that it will not run on existing hardware.

Misc. Features

  • NFC will be integrated into Windows Phone 8 for sharing photos, Office docs and contacts.
  • Windows Phone 8 will come with a new digital Wallet feature that does two great things. It can keep debit and credit cards, coupons, boarding passes, and other important info right at your fingertips. And when paired with a secure SIM from your carrier, you can also pay for things with a tap of your phone at compatible checkout counters. We doubt the last bit will come to India soon, though.
  • Windows Phone 8 supports removable microSD cards, so users can stuff their phone with extra photos, music, and whatever else is important and then easily move it all onto their PC.
  • Windows Phone 8 builds in Nokia mapping as part of the platform. This partnership will provide more detailed maps and turn-by-turn directions in many countries, plus the ability to store maps offline on your phone, so you can work with maps without a data connection.
  • Windows Phone 8 will support a total of 50 languages and Marketplace is expanding as well, app support will be for up to 180 countries, that is nearly triple the current footprint.
  • OTA updates will be possible, so you won’t have to update your phone via connecting it to the PC. Devices will be supported at least 18 months from the launch date.
  • The first wave of devices for Windows Phone 8 will come from Nokia, Huawei, Samsung, and HTC, all built on next-generation chips from Qualcomm, as mentioned earlier.

If you’ve used any of Samsung’s flagships in the past, you’ll be right at home with the new S4. We quite liked the handset during our brief encounter with it a few weeks back and after using it for about a week, we have come to like it even more.
