Basic Tips For The Noob iPhone User

In the last couple of months, I happened to be privy to some rather odd behavior from a few acquaintances who had just purchased iPhones. Having asked my opinion on whether it was worth it or not, I provided them with the best answer I could considering it’s my job and told them to check out Tech2.0 or other sites for any more info on the handset if they wished. Presuming that one would not spend so much of money just for shits and giggles, I was under the impression that these people, who gave up their BlackBerrys, Nokias and Samsungs for the ‘almighty’ iPhone knew what they were getting into. Till they started calling me and asking about some really basic things, that anyone would figure out by just using the handset.

In light of this, I decided to look around and come up with a few simple tips for the Noob iPhone user. Please understand this is not for those who are already using the handset, even though I know a few of those who didn’t know some of these things. This article is PARTICULARLY for first time users. So for all you first timers venturing into the world of Multitouch, here are a few things to help you get the best out of your shiny (not for too long) iPhone.

If you happen to be using the handsfree kit of the iPhone, it’ll be equipped with a button to answer calls, just like any other handsfree kit for any other handset. However what a lot of people are unaware of is that the same button can be used to control Audio playback from the iPod. A single press is to pause or restart and double press is to skip tracks.

We should all know by now that the iPhone is a multitouch enabled device which means; unlike other touchscreen handsets you can actually use two fingers simultaneously on the display for various purposes. For example, to zoom into an image you can use two fingers to pinch the screen and zoom in and separate them to zoom out. You could also just double tap the screen to zoom in or out as well and slide your finger around to move the image. The same features works for web pages as well.

Besides pinch control and double tapping on a web page to zoom in and out, if you’re at the bottom of the page and want to return to the top just tap the top section of the screen to auto scroll to the top. It takes a second.

While typing an SMS, email, Note etc. if you reach the end of a sentence, you can double tap the Space bar to insert a Full Stop and leave a space as well. If you’re looking to insert a symbol just press the 123 space and you can just drag your finger to the required option and let go. You’ll also automatically return to the QWERTY keyboard immediately after. In case you’re wondering the text is actually entered on the screen only when you remove your finger from the desired alphabet.
