Top iPhone Killers: The List Continues (Part III)

Still more handsets that aim to dethrone the iPhone.

Top iPhone Killers: The List Continues (Part III)

Openmoko Neo 1973
Openmoko’s Neo 1973 handset can be considered a major contender in the list of i-Killers simply because of its totally open OS. When it comes to design the Neo 1973 isn’t too hot, but at least it doesn’t have the same old rectangular shape like the other handsets in the list. The Neo has an oval shape with a 2.8 inch VGA TFT touchscreen display. The screen is design to be used with your finger or with the stylus.

This tri-band mobile comes with integrated AGPS, Bluetooth v2.0 and a microSD card slot for expanding the memory. It runs on a 266MHz Samsung System on a Chip. The Neo incorporates a high quality audio codec so it’s quite possible that your music just may sound as good as with the iPhone’s music player, if not better. With is Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) system, this is probably the most open mobile there is, making even the Symbian S60 take a head spin.

The iPhone is in no way a completed product. Let’s face it, the 3G iPhone will be out soon, and rumors have it that it’s going to be loaded with more goodies than you may expect. These might include an internal GPS module, so Google Maps would become your second choice. Developers are constantly coming up with applications for the iPhone, and it may be a really long time before we see a "fully loaded" iPhone that would appeal to every single mobile user.

In the meantime, other companies will also be developing their i-Killers and (who knows?) one of them might just KO Apple's already legendary handset. As long as those handsets keep popping up, I’ll keep updating this list for you. What I’d like to know is: out of the three lists of handsets I’ve compiled, which handset would you pick as the ultimate i-Killer? And all you iPhone lovers, which one do you think can give the iPhone a run for its money? Please leave your comments and I’ll take your views into account while announcing the winner in the next feature.
