Wacky Doodles - Tech2's Favorite Google Doodles

The Google Doodle, that little bit of extra color that Google adds to your regular search day. It’s been as innovative as allowing you to actually play Pac Man or as colorful as a full blown comic book character like Asterix kicking a Roman soldier's ‘derrière’. It’s also represented some of the world’s most famous individuals, inventions and special days in some seriously animated fashions that do nothing more than put a smile on your face when you’re looking for anything in the online frontier.

We picked out a few from the scores that piqued our interest.

Jules Verne

The name Jules Verne is as synonymous with science fiction and this genius of a writer could very well be considered the father of Sci-Fi. To commemorate his 183rd birthday, Google's Doodle, showcased on Feb 08 2011, featured an animated undersea graphic simulating, what we can only assume, is their tribute to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Thomas Edison

On Feb 11 2011, Google’s Doodle featured another animated tribute to the father of Electricity in a very Leonardo Da Vinci styled layout of what could have been the first light bulb.

Invention of the X-Ray

On November 08 2010, in celebration of 115 years of the X-Ray (it’s really been that long), Google’s slightly dark Doodle featured a see through logo with a few weird items that showed up in between. While some had a hidden meaning, others seemed like they were there just for fun. We don’t care one way or the other, it was still quite entertaining.

Pac-Man

In the early 1980s - well 1980 to be more precise - one of the most famous video games, and one that still has its cult following was the monster muncher Pac-Man. On May 21 2010, Google’s Doodle was a commemorative fully animated, fully interactive tribute to NAMCO BANDAI’s famous arcade game. Pac-Man celebrated his 30th anniversary and Google was there to show him some love.

Alexander Popov's Invention of the Radio
In this country a large number of the population are avid radio listeners and to celebrate the Invention of the Radio, Google paid tribute to one of the founders – Alexander Popov. The Doodle was available only for Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

Moon Landing
On July 20 1969, 41 years, ago, man laid his feet on the Moon’s surface for the first time. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on Apollo 11 were the forerunners in this event and to celebrate that glorious and groundbreaking undertaking, Google paid tribute to the first manned Moon landing on July 20th 2009 with a Doodle for the 40th anniversary.

Invention of the Barcode
On October 07 2009 Google paid tribute to the invention of the Bar Code, our ever so handy system of storing information in a visual form that’s not easily readable with the naked eye.

Hubble Space Telescope's 20th Anniversary
A little over 20 years ago NASA launched what we could be considered the world’s most sophisticated and versatile orbiting telescopes. With the Hubble Space Telescope we’ve able to discover so much more about our Galaxy and the space that surrounds our planet. Google’s commemorative Doodle that was up on April 24 2010, was a tribute to one of the many wonders that man has created to help explore the ‘Final Frontier’.

SDCC ’09 Superhero Doodle
Comic book artist extraordinaire, Jim Lee, created a special Google Doodle for 2009’s San Diego Comic Con showing of DC’s greatest heroes. We just had to include this, being fans of the comic book genre.

Michael Jackson
Our final Doodle is Google’s tribute to the true King of Pop, Michael Jackson - a man who brought us the gift of music and entertained us for over 30 years and continues to do so even after his death.
