ISO controls the digital camera's sensitivity to light - the higher this value, the more is the sensor sensitive to light. Increase the ISO and you'll notice an increase in exposure with the same aperture and shutter speed. Now supposed you're shooting in low light condition and you cannot lower the shutter speed (say beyond 1/30 sec) because you'd get blurry shots because of hand shake. To prevent under exposure in such a condition, boosting the ISO (say from 200 to 800) will significantly improve the exposure. However, note that boosting the ISO or the sensor's sensitivity to light results in noise or graininess. And this is more preceivable in digital cameras than DSLRs due to the tiny sensors they use. With ISO set to auto, the camera automatically boosts the shutter speed in low light in order to deliver steady shots.
