Limiting the number of mails fetched by Windows Live Mail

I want to use Windows Live Mail as a mail client for my email ids (have half a dozen of them :P). The problem is Windows Live starts fetching the entire inbox which is pretty cumbersome. Is there a way to limit the number of mails fetched (like, for example, only the 50 most recent mails) like in iPod/iPhone? If not possible in Windows Live Mail, is there any other client which supports this facility? And, also I don't want it to delete the emails in my main inbox. Thanks!

And how to limit in Thunderbird? I couldn't find it. It is downloading my entire inbox!
