I think with the quality of the tablet, the government will also have to do a lot of convincing. All the news going around is not helping it.

AS for this question, I am completely on the fence. Though the tablet is designed for students and pricing it accordingly, I have a fair amount of friends who can afford an iPad 2 64GB who have preordered it! The reason behind them buying it baffles me and they say they booked it just cause it is cheap and they do not actually care if it will work later on or no.

Being cheap is basically the only selling point of this tablet and honestly it is definitely not looking to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, iPad 2, BlackBerry PlayBook or any other tablet available in the market. It is here just to be a tablet that sells, not looking for performances, nothing.

But in the year 2012, when functionality is a top priority, one SHOULD be a bit vary of what components are used in some electronic gadget they are purchasing no matter if it is super mass produced or not. For me, looking at the specifications of the tablet, it appears good on paper but then again its a tablet that has a price of lower than $100 and would definitely make me think twice over spending my money on it, no matter how reasonable the amount is.

I completely agree with HatZim that the majority of the money may be going to the middlemen and the one's that are finalizing the deal instead of adding quality components in the slate.

Ending my rant, I am trying to be optimistic about it's success as more people can own tablets and reduce the strain of carrying heavy bags to school, etc. but I honestly dont know how successful this tablet will be a few months down the line when a sizable amount of people own it.

With the recent reports of the Aakash 2 expected to launch by April-May...the tablet surely is here to stay...at least for a while...and with improved functionality may be a little longer...

@A_qUbe we are an extremely price sensitive market...its one of the highest criteria for picking products from store shelves...

However, one needs to understand that you cannot expect an iPad when you purchase a low end tablet....

@Naina Taking your point into consideration, 3000 odd is still a very high price. Those who spend that kind of money need a product that will last for a considerable amount of time. As a recent report suggested that one of the manufacturers of the Akash tablet who have also made another tablet had parts falling off. I honestly hope that it works out for the masses and I don't expect the tablet to be like the iPad or any higher end tablet, just a slate that can be intact and not have issues and glitches every other time.

@A_qUbe - The Aakash tablet has been priced such only to make it affordable to students who cannot afford it. It is certainly not trying to match up to the iPad, or the Galaxy Tab 10.1. But, the way it is moving currently - getting better specifications, without the price moving much - it surely has the potential to be the most strong-rooted, low-cost tablet in the country.

Agreed.... Moreover, i believe there isn't a single tablet..so far..in the market to match the sub-3k price...the MID 7" can be bargained up to Rs. 3400 but here again it doesn't deliver an exceptional performance either....

Yes, Specs wise it did... especially taking into account the Rs. 3250 price tag...

Well, Aakash has killed itself. Till date they've not even delivered one Ubislate7+ tablet. They keep extending their timelines. Even now there is no clear picture as to when they are planning to start shipping. I had booked one the day the prebookings went online, till date the only thing I have received from them is an email stating the prebooking number. I have decided to dump the plan and go for BSNL-Pantel, hope this one too won't turn up the same way as Datawind.
