Internships and Placements (Please please respond)
This is for all the guys who are in their college doing engineering and are excited about their internships and want to work before hand to get better placements. I am pretty sure there are people here who have a lot of experience with their jobs and have been in that sector long enough to guide someone who's totally new to it, like us.
In my case, I am doing computer science engineering from I.P. university and I am in my 3rd year. I am going to do my internship at IIIT Delhi, that's all I could manage to get on my own since most of the companies didn't really care to reply to my internship offer and those which did wanted students who were pursuing M.Tech or PHD. Even though my time is up, I just wanted to know how do we get a good internship if we are not from IIT, DCE, NSIT, BITS or the NITS or IIIT and also if we do not have any links. I have seen a lot of students around getting their internships sourced into big companies but I have also seen my friends who did not have this opportunity and they didn't even get an acceptance letter from IIIT and hence have no internship offer as of now. And you have to trust me on this one, some of them are really good. I don't really care about the stipend but just about how helpful would it be in the long term.
Do internships from a good company or institute help you in securing a better job?
Should I go for the project at IIIT if I wish to apply for a job after my B.tech or should I try for some company? IIIT Delhi has a very good and impressive faculty and that is the reason why I was pretty positive about this. If someone has a different opinion, please do share it.
My second question is on placements. What should I do to get a better placement? I have an aggregate of 77% (in case that matters). I mean it doesn't have to be an on campus placement as the companies which come to I.P. University are usually not the core software development companies, I can go for an off campus placement. I just want to know what kind of work should I do in order to actually get noticed and stand out from the crowd, so that a core software company sees me as their next employee.
Are there any specific subjects I should be thorough with??
When it comes to programming, is it okay if I am into Java and C++ programming only and not into Web development ??
Do I need to know less number of languages in detail or instead know more languages ? So the quality vs quantity question.
Will knowing advanced Java apart from core Java help me ?
What are some of the good companies I should apply for if I wish to be a programmer in Java and C++?
I know its a long post but then these have been some of my biggest questions of all times, I would be glad if someone could answer them.
I am pretty sure every student has questions of the same sort popping up in his mind. I am willing to work hard (and I am too :P )but I just need direction, hope someone here can show me the way.

No.

Be thorough with the basics, don't mug up textbooks.
When it comes to programming, is it okay if I am into Java and C++ programming only and not into Web development ??
er, I don't see why not.
Do I need to know less number of languages in detail or instead know more languages ? So the quality vs quantity question.
Claiming you know language x,y,z,a,b,c doesn't hurt or help. Quality >>> quantity.
What are some of the good companies I should apply for if I wish to be a programmer in Java and C++?
Define "good".
