Re: icons changed
Looks like a virus problem.
From Application icons and extension changed to .LNK - Microsoft Answers:
The other method that requires a regedit is also fairly simple, but recommend you set a manual restore point before starting. A regedit always has the potential to mess up your system. procedures are:
- Click Start Menu, and then type regedit in the Start Search and press ENTER.
- Navigate to the following registry branch:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts\[ext]
Replace the [ext] with the actual file extension that you want to restore its file type association to revert back to original Windows 7 default (probably .lnk). If you unsure, simply browse through all the sub-key under FileExts.
- Delete the sub-key named UserChoice.
- Exit from Registry Editor.

Re: icons changed
I think what has happened actually that the file association of all the icons have got changed. I have got many issues like that while taking calls. What I use to do is create a new account (user or admin either one (Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Manager another account > Create a new account)) and get all the data transferred to the new account from the old account (by going to Start > Computer > C: Drive > Users and copy all the contents from the old account to the new account). NOTE: while transferring the data make sure you don't copy the 'Appdata' folder otherwise all the settings will get transferred to the new account and you will have the same problem on the new account as well.
