Russian Site Offered eBay Accounts for $5

28 Mar, 2006, 9:53 am IST | Sharon Khare |

A Russian website offering to sell eBay customers' account information has been shut down. The site also had a few PayPal accounts up for sale. Using an eBay customer's login and password, a con could post items for sale, collect payments and then classically not deliver the goods. Security vendor, Sunbelt Software, reported this to eBay, which in turn worked with the local ISP to have it taken offline. The site may have been collecting the information through phishing attacks or a Trojan horse virus and preferred accounts that were not used often; so it would be sometime before a user noticed something was amiss. The site also asked for a higher price ($5 to $25) per account for those with good feedback ratings. The site was registered in December 2005, supposedly to a company in Cypress, California.
