Future Bluetooth Standard Chosen

30 Mar, 2006, 9:22 am IST | Jayesh Mansukhani |

Bluetooth SIG, the parent body of Bluetooth development, has announced that it is adopting the WiMedia Alliance version of Ultrawideband (UWB) as its future standard, over that of the competing variant proposed by the UWB Forum. This move will finally settle a long-term argument regarding the future of Bluetooth, which has become very popular over the last few years as - among other things - one of the primary points of convergence between the computers and mobile phones. For now older bluetooth standards will continue to remain in place for lower-speed devices like mice and keyboards. UWB devices will become available for devices that require faster data transmission, such as streaming video from a camera to a computer or television.
