Intel Unveils PC Platform for Rural India

30 Mar, 2006, 7:40 am IST | Sharon Khare | Desktops

Intel has launched a PC platform developed exclusively to meet the needs of rural villages and communities in the country, while being strong enough to withstand the environmental conditions. The company also announced its "Jagruti" ("Awakening") initiative designed to provide rural communities with greater economic and social opportunities. The initiative will support the spread of rural Internet "kiosks" based on the new Intel-powered Community PC. Intel apparently conducted intensive ethnographic studies in rural parts of the country and discovered a desire for technology access in remote areas but with weather conditions (heat, dust, humidity) and unreliable power sources in such areas not too favorable on a PC's functioning, the Intel-powered Community PC platform was developed to be a fully functional, expandable and shared-access computing solution. The system has a ruggedized chassis designed to withstand dusty conditions, varying temperatures and high humidity and to keep the motherboard cool at temperatures as high as 45 degrees Celsius and the PC resistant to humidity levels of 70 to 85 RH (Relative Humidity). The PC is equipped with a Customized Power Supply Unit (CPSU), which allows the PC to maintain continuous load power in the event of a power outage. intelcommunitypc_t.jpg
