Logitech Launches New Video Calling Service
By: Tech2.com News Staff   |   Jun 19, 2009

Looking to make video calling easier Logitech has launched Logitech Vid, a free, fast and easy way to make true-to-life video calls with a Logitech webcam on a PC or Mac computer.

Apart form offering a streamlined setup and a simple, intuitive interface. Logitech Vid optimizes the speed and resolution of a video call, to get the best-possible frame rate and resolution for the webcam being used.
"Video calling has been around for more than a decade, but Vid truly has the potential to make video calling one of the primary ways that people stay in touch with their loved ones," said Gina Clark, general manager and vice president of Logitech’s Internet Communications business unit. "Vid gives you the best of both worlds – eliminating the biggest obstacles to making video calls, while still providing the exceptional-quality audio and video that you expect from Logitech. Above all, you don’t need to be tech-savvy to use Vid."

Unlike video calling through IM or VoIP programs, Vid was designed exclusively for video calling.

Vid is set up automatically when a Logitech webcam is plugged in. No screen names and no third-party software downloads are required. When a video call needs to be made, Vid uses the friend or family member’s e-mail address to connect and the person has to simply accept the e-mail invitation to participate in a video call.

Vid is free with any Logitech webcam – and for anyone you call. There are no added charges. If you don’t have a Logitech webcam, you can still use Vid if a friend or family member invites you. And since nothing's for free here's the catch. If you don't have a Logitech webcam and are invited to chat via Vid with someone who also isn't using a Logitech webcam you can use Vid only for 30 days, at the end of which you will have to buy a Logitech webcam to avail of the service.

Vid is compatible with PC and Mac computers, as well as stand-alone and embedded webcams.

Logitech Vid is available for download at www.logitech.com/Vid and is free for anyone with a Logitech webcam or anyone who is invited by a Logitech webcam owner.

Why not stay with Skype instead of being forced to purchase a Logitec web can to use Ligitec Vid.

As a marketing gimmick to 'Sell' Logitec webcams I wonder how much revenue it will actually put in to Logitec coffers.

Frankly, it has put me 'Off' and I own and use several Logitec products, Wireless keyboad, mouse, Headset and so on.

I think its a really crappy way of pushing a Logitec product.
