Skype's IPTV Due Early Next Year
By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   Dec 18, 2006

Skype's upcoming global broadband television service, code named the Venice Project, has reportedly been tested by 6000 individuals and is due for a launch, early next year.

Skype representatives say, the Project will offer 'near high-definition', ad-supported programs, with tools for users to personalize their channels or discuss programs with others. Moreover, the programs on Skype's IPTV will not require digital rights management protection.

At present, the Venice project has attracted few big-name channels, but Skype has not disclosed the names of its partners, yet. However, according to an unconfirmed source, big record labels like Warner Music have plans to use the service to create channels for some of its artists, including Paris Hilton.

Skype hopes to provide outlets for traditional broadcasters, independent producers who struggle to reach a global audience, national broadcasters as well as entertainment companies looking for new ways to promote their acts. According to Skype representatives, unlike YouTube or video-on-demand services, the Venice Project will offer conventionally programmed channels with content ranging from documentaries and drama to music videos."

The Venice project will earn revenue from advertisements on the channels, with the amount varying according to whether the content owner sells the advertising or whether it is booked by The Venice Project's own sales team.
