Protestors Burn Nokia Phones in Jabalpur
By: Shayne Rana   |   Dec 24, 2008

The current tension between the nation and our neighbor Pakistan hit a new chord as per the reports. Nokia in their latest version of Nokia Maps 2.0 apparently shows the state of Kashmir as being part of Pakistan's territory, and obviously this is not something any vote seeking Indian politician would take lightly.

A group of BJP members raided and set fire to a bunch of mobiles from a Nokia Dealer in the city of Jabalpur. According to a few of the organizers, the incident was a form of protest. The misrepresentation in the application and maps was considered to be 'a case of anti-nationalism'.

What I'd like to know is, instead of destroying property, wouldn't it have been simpler to notify the company and have them post an immediate upgrade to the application and maps? I’m not going to sit here and condone the protestors' actions or the oversight on Nokia's behalf for that matter, but I am absolutely sure the situation could have been handled better and without any violence.

Let us know what you think by leaving your comments.

yes there is always a simpler way to get the work done then to protest in this weird way...but after all its a eye catching stunt...so no doubt they have to do in this fashion....
riken @ Jan 20, 2009
What BJP worker did is not part of question, question is Internationally also people think that Kashmir is part of Pakistan, which is not acceptable, How can NOKIA take such map without having permission from external affair. And its pathetic to see that this information dn't come to external affair department of our govenrment. I am pretty sure NOKIA might have shown portion of Sia-Chin also in CHINA . Why common people ned to come for protest why can't government find out all such issues themselve. Its because government official has forgetten their roles and responsibilty. According to me in place of NOKIA phone people should burn these government officials
RAJ @ Jan 16, 2009
definately the bjp did wrong since there are several ways to show protest.
but if this kind of thing is not done also, it wouldnt have gathered the attention even. only after violance today`s indian youth especially think about the same
arun @ Dec 31, 2008
After burning all new mobiles will these BJP Workers throwdown there own Nokia mobiles which they are using, I am sure almost all of them or atleast 70 to 80% party workers may be having Nokia Mobiles, my question is, will thay throwdown there nokia mobiles and burn them as that have burned all new mobiles from Nokia dealer. I share the same feeling like any other Indian. But correcting the things by adopting distructive methods is not a wise idea. apart from this nokia incident, we have witnessed lot of other incidents where ppl distroyed public property and our so called national leaders stand ahead and watch the moment.
Slaman Abedi @ Dec 29, 2008
Well guys!! being a nationalist Indian, I share the same feeling like any other Indian. But correcting the things by adopting distructive methods is not a wise idea. apart from this nokia incident, we have witnessed lot of other incidents where angry mobs(Public) have distroyed trains/ofifice etc. which is the public property( Every body is paying for that in terms of various taxes). Ppl have to realize that distroying own property is not going serve the intended purpos. In fact the organisers of any such events, which results in damaging public property in any form, should be legaly held responsible and made to reimburse the money from thier own pocket. Why every bodies money to be waisted in such stupid acts.
Rashpal Saini @ Dec 28, 2008
If the above activity is wrong, then guys it will not be long time when INDIA will be named into PAKISTAN.

Come on Guys now its not time for Gandhi giri, Its time for Subhas Chandra Bose Giri.

"Jai Hind"
Ronak @ Dec 27, 2008
This was done by Microsoft in their Windows 98 release and the Indian Govt banned it and so M$ immediately rectified this Map.

I think there was BJP Govt that time. The Congress Govt should have done this but, they are lame as hell.
SomeOne @ Dec 27, 2008
what better can u expect from BJP? they're just living up to their reputation for desperately gaining attention in the name of nationalism and creating violence and nuisance.
Shyam Bhat @ Dec 27, 2008
by reacting in such a way they are only showing how uncivilised and ill-mannered they are.....they just need a way to get the support of the public but they are actually losing a lot of votes this way...
Manish Jeenwal @ Dec 26, 2008
thats only because we vote our politcians who are basically illlitrate and uneducated...instead of blaming them why cant we blame our selves for voting this kind of people to power. Violence and aggression has become part of our lives and now reflects in our blood....
Nazir Khambati @ Dec 26, 2008
Really this is ridiculous, you r right they can handle situation better. This politician don't want the things to go better but they only come into limelight. This is only damn politics...
Ankur @ Dec 26, 2008
how can a company like nokia do this one, thiis against the interests of all indian
lakshminarayan @ Dec 26, 2008
BJP does not have any constructive work to do. Simply by doing this they are loosing many votes!! Mind It. !!
Jay @ Dec 26, 2008
this is just a nuicance that is being created by the so called politicians of our country just toget some attention and get votes. Its company's will. What are they trying to prove by destroying the property.
Vijay Ranjan Kolluru @ Dec 25, 2008
Yup!! You Are absolutely Right. I Agree With You.
Vinay Mhatre @ Dec 25, 2008
I would have had a PIL filed against them or for that matter even Sue them and make some money for the country ... This is foolish of them to destroy their own property.
Arun @ Dec 25, 2008

Arun @ Dec 25, 2008
Protesting on a company's failure to fix an error AFTER notifying them would have been the way to go..... although, protesting by buring phones from a local dfistributer is certainly not the way to do it!

But just notifying the compnay wouldnt have generated much public attention..... No politician would like that!

Vandalism shoudnt be tolerated! These half-branied politician knuckle heads need to be dealt with the law stretched to its limit!
arvidh @ Dec 25, 2008
I think logical thinking process is something which is unknown to fanatics and politicians.
How come a party with members practicing vandalism expect to run the country???
Agniva @ Dec 25, 2008
I agree with what the writer has said while ending the article. Violence is not the answer to everything. Such things can be handled peacefully and required corrections can be done certainly.
Kshitij @ Dec 25, 2008
A simple information to the company could have resolved the matter.
Dilp @ Dec 25, 2008
@Great admirer of India.Make sure that your parents wear a condom from now on so that they dont make a mistake like you again
Sarthak @ Dec 25, 2008
A**h****.This perfectly describes a lot of the Indian population. As an Indian myself it pains me to say this but when I see incidents like these it pains me.One of the reasons why India will always stay behind other countries. As if burning down the shop is gonna f'in do anything.Certified assholes
Sarthak @ Dec 25, 2008
Hi in the send last line there is a small correction, instead of "no Indian should destroy their Nokia phones" it should be "all Indians should destroy their nokia phones" !!! I aplogise for sentence formation mistake !!!!!!!!!
Gopala @ Dec 25, 2008
Nokia should consider seriously about the maps issue !!!! Nokia is the most popular brand in India and it has 70% of Indian market with wide price range from Rs. 1000 to Rs. 50000/-. Indians have respected and embraced nokia to the highest level. But Nokia has betrayed India by hows the state of Kashmir as being part of Pakistan's territory !!!!! This is injustice to Indians !!! Nokia should say public apology to Indians through all the forms of media and it should immediately change the map !!!!!!!!!!!!!! If this does not happen, no Indian should destroy their Nokia phones and nokia should be banned in India !!!!!!!!!!!! Jai Hind !!!!!!!
Gopalaz @ Dec 25, 2008
8GB Storage, Adv. Music Player Built-in Stereo Speaker. Book Now!...think its enough, its time to talk to pakistan and resolve the kashmir issue peacefully because its good for india and the whole world otherwise there will be nothing but distruction
surojit saha @ Dec 25, 2008

Arjun @ Dec 25, 2008

prakash basu @ Dec 25, 2008
Is it true Chaina is behind this burning of Nokia cellphones? Trust our desi policitians to destroy our own property and feel as if they have done a great thing and given a good lesson to Nokia people. such fellows and their supporters should examine there heads. Plain idiots.
Doddappa @ Dec 25, 2008
After the terrorrists, these politicians should be lined up against a wall and ****.
Seriously!!!... its about time we wake up open our eyes.
Agreed that its a grave mistake, but there are other ways to tackle these things more effectively.
Rather than some vote seeking scum trying to portray his [false] patriotism
ZAK @ Dec 25, 2008
Now its govt to act.Should ban Nokia in india.Itdoes not honour Indian law. They keep on doing mistakes. Then BL6C battery problem now this one. They never correct themselves. They should be banned right away.No quality in phones and no quality in after sales service.Idiotic company
ramesh @ Dec 24, 2008

hope we keep such senseless people out from power by proper voting.
sachin @ Dec 24, 2008
It is utterly irresponsibe and disgusting...........they themselves are doing no good to the nation by protesting in a matter they should not.
Arpan Jha @ Dec 24, 2008
?CRITICIZE All those who use NOKIA.
?DON'T USE NOKIA.
?THREAT ALL NOKIA Dealers!

It's certain 'CHINA' is only behind all this FUSS.
IPS-kurndra @ Dec 24, 2008
The Best way is to stop purchasing Nokia Phones. These western companies can only be treated in this manner. You punish one , all will be on the line after that.
Indian @ Dec 24, 2008
they have done good thing because just simple protest have not be national as well as international news and the nokia compny think to there self nokia is a brand just because of indians or they will be noting
prakhar @ Dec 24, 2008
Come to think of it ...

.. as such I am not condoning the act .. the poor dealer suffered a huge loss... and the real culprit is still at large ...

.. but if these guys hadnt protested (in whichever way they did), it wud have never been reported and we wud never have come to know of it. Instead, a more sensible option (or is it) wud have been to ransack Nokia's developement center. Such an act, and that too at such a time is totally unacceptable. If such a thing wud have happened somewhere in US, am sure Nokia wud have been taken to task.

And I laud Tech2's efforts here, to do something different ... nice!
Ankush Sharma @ Dec 24, 2008
Cant the police book the so called organizers or the members of that group for damage of property & goods!!!

Be sensible, these goons will run away when some one shows them the gun.
There's something called law & order, these groups arent following any of those.
Rahul @ Dec 24, 2008
wrong !whats d fault of dealer???/
amod @ Dec 24, 2008
burning phones? craziest thing.... if they need to protest, let it be legal... burning phones only adds up to the already polluted atmosphere of this planet. (they even print on every phone this message: "do not expose to flame/do not burn")...
vik. @ Dec 24, 2008
yaaa i think its not right to light up the mobles.... instead smash them by a hammer ;)
fsfs @ Dec 24, 2008
hey wats dis protestors burn nokia phones
swati sharma @ Dec 24, 2008
hey wats dis protestors burn nokia phones
swati sharma @ Dec 24, 2008
This protest can be peaceful demonstrations against the said feature/service of Nokia....no need to burn shops of our own indians
Abhishek @ Dec 24, 2008
I don't condone the attack but meanwhile Nokia should be taken to task. But what I find irritating is your article which says, "Nokia Maps 2.0 apparently shows the state of Kashmir as being part of Pakistan's territory, and obviously this is not something any vote seeking Indian politician would take lightly". What do u mean by this. Don't all the Indians get irritated if someone says Kashmir is part of Pakistan? Why just politicians? Do u take this matter lightly?
Gopal @ Dec 24, 2008
In my point of view ...the activists have done the right thing.
what nokia has done is a blunder, and if we simply request them to correct the settings --things will not work.
Vyas @ Dec 24, 2008
what else can we expect, they should have been sent in front line to fight terrorist in mumbai, they would have burned them too!!!!!!!!!!
pity on the poor dealer. god bless india
bascillastar @ Dec 24, 2008
What they have done is totally correct
vivek @ Dec 24, 2008

Ujj @ Dec 24, 2008
india is way too corrupt for a peaceful protest
pa1 @ Dec 24, 2008
Nokia Sucks. Proved again
Sauarv @ Dec 24, 2008
Thats a very right question.
Leo Anand @ Dec 24, 2008
Agree with you completely...absolutely the wrong way to register a protest...a ridiculous & warped way to express 'nationalism'...acts like these need to be vociferously condemned.
Gopesh Singh @ Dec 24, 2008
A simple Governmental ban on using Nokia phones would suffice no need for burning our own shopes for the actions of European thugs.
Amar @ Dec 24, 2008
This was the stupdiest thing to do they should have informed the company instead to take immediate action's and by burning up someone's property they didn't changed the situation instead try to show-off their political power only as well i would say this is no less than a crime by ruining someone's property they didn't showed their point at all.
Raj @ Dec 24, 2008
Moronic political parties have no other work except for destroying property which is not theirs. Idiots.
Sathya @ Dec 24, 2008
A simple objection would have done it,the protests are just for media publicity!
