Vodafone, Airtel Offer Pre-Registering of iPhone

When the iPhone 3G was announced, unlike Airtel, Vodafone made no formal announcement that it would be bringing the much awaited mobile phone to India.
Apple, though, confirmed this by mentioning that India would get the iPhone 3G through Airtel and Vodafone.
Now Vodafone has announced that people can pre-register for the iPhone with them, indicating that the iPhone will be available soon. The company is tight-lipped on the question 'How soon?'. All they are willing to divulge is that the iPhone will be compatible only with the 2G networks and some of the iPhone 3G's features may not work here.
Airtel too is inviting people to book their iPhone with them.

We need to wait whether the material quality is same to that of US iPhones. Sometimes, it is possible to manufacture cheaper quality materials for third-world countries like India. Blackberry devices use this tactics still making Indian customers to pay more than US customers yet provide them sub-standard quality.

Apple has announced that the iPhone 3G will cost 199 USD for the 8 GB variant and 299 USD for the 16 GB variant. So that translates to a price of Rs. 8000 and Rs. 12000 respectively.
Me:
Thats not going to be the case Arjun. People in US are being offered the phone for that price is because they have to sign a 2 year ontract with AT&T which is quite expensive. In other words, AT&T is offering to pay quite a bit of the iphone's actual cost. The phone otherwise would cost more than double that rate. This phone will be able in other countries (where the users dont have to sign any contract) for around $500 to $700. So I guess in India, the 16GB version phone should be available around 23K which I think is too high for this phone.
