Vodafone Looking at Installment Scheme to Sell iPhone
By: IANS   |   Aug 25, 2008

Vodafone, one of the two license holders for the latest Apple iPhone that went on sale at midnight Thursday in India, is looking at easy finance schemes to help sell the product in the country, a person familiar with the development said.

"Vodafone is talking to Barclays and ICICI Bank for introducing two monthly schemes for six and 12 months," the person requesting anonymity told IANS Friday.

Bharti Airtel, the other license holder in India, declined to make any comment, but it is believed it too is talking to several banks.

The Apple iPhone 3G (third generation) was launched in Singapore and the Philippines apart from India on Thursday. While it costs around Rs. 8,000 in the US where Apple is headquartered, it costs around Rs. 9,840 in Singapore.

In India, the iPhone is priced at Rs. 31,000 for 8GB and Rs. 36,100 for 16GB of memory space.

Now, to push sales, Vodafone is trying to increase iPhone sales by arranging for financing schemes for its products.

"We expect to sell anywhere between 50 to 100 phones a day," the source said. "However it is too early to predict how the sales will shape up."

Sanjay Gupta, Airtel's chief marketing officer said, "We will only be able to figure out the trend only after a week or so. The response has been overwhelming but it's still not clear how many of the pre-bookings will actually convert to sales."

Airtel received over 200,000 pre-bookings for the phone, the process was started about two months ago.

They gray market, which has been raking in the moolah on iPhones for more than a year were despondent. Dealers at Delhi's Gaffar Market - centre for electronics goods sale - were of the opinion that with the phone being sold by authorized dealers their share in the pie would be reduced to nil.

"We were selling the 3G version till a few days ago for anything between Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 55,000. There will always be people who will spend anything. The [older] 2G version sold for around Rs.24,000-25,000. Now, we will have to undercut," said a dealer in Gaffar Market.

The iPhone is being sold in Hyderabad and Bangalore besides the four metropolitan cities and will be later introduced in 65 cities.

The phone comes locked to the service provider, which means a user cannot switch his or her operator while using an iPhone.

However, the availability of a number of software in the market for hacking the iPhone has not gone unnoticed by telecom operators.

"We are aware of the hacking software that are available and are used to unlock the iPhone, but customers who will stay with Airtel will be able to enjoy iPhone's full benefits including the data plans," Sanjay Kapoor, Airtel's president (mobility) said.

The phone, which won Time magazine's coveted 'Invention of the Year 2007' honour, and marked the Cupertino-based computer giant's foray into the mobile phone arena, debuted in June last year.

"More than 30,000 iPhone's (2G) are running on the Airtel network alone," Sanjay Kapoor said.

What is made for taxi drivers in US of A, is priced high and aimed at the Higher Class in India... May be that is why our Higher Class is content in driving taxis in USA...

iPhone 3G interest has been lost by many on the day of launch and more and more people are getting freedom from the HYPE which was unsucessfully created.

If we all open our eyes we will see many better and cheap opportunities in the local market.

iPhone is not going to sustain this high tide of PRICE created by Apple itself!

iIF VODAFONE LAUNCH A SCHEME TO PAY 10RS/MONTH THAN A PERSON CAN THINK TO BUY IPHONE I THINK A PERSON MUST WAIT FOR JUST 3 MONTHS MANY CELL COMPANIES ARE LAUNCHING 3G IN SHORT TIME THANKS... NAEEM

Why you all make such halla gulla about this? I guess the reason is because of expectation that it will be priced in the same way as US or elsewhere..wait for sometime the prices will come down..even the other phones in the past were highly priced like motorazr,N6600 and even N95
etc ...moreover the prices will come down if the iphone is manufactured here and we have apple stores here( Nokia has its own manufacturing unit here thats why the prices are lower as compared to the past)
There is a saying make hay while sun shines thats what vodafone and airtel are doing..once the sun is gone then prices will come down

and btw i am not a promoter or related to apple in any way

I just changed my mind & ordered Rs 58,000.00 for DELL Sudio 17" laptop, iPhone interest vanished, DELL has got an opportunity business.

I feel not to think about iphone for another 1 year, till we see real 3G in action in India.
devarajan @ Aug 27, 2008
Rs 30,000 for iphone is not worth..We dont even have 3G facility in India..Then y these networks are cheatin a lot..
sujay @ Aug 27, 2008
Today Airtel called to check if I would be interested to buy iPhone...and the answer was obvious NO. The iPhone launch has failed miserably, thats why these companies are launching EMI schemes, calling people to beg them to buy this insanely priced incredible device...
Gaurav @ Aug 26, 2008
@mohit khosla u could have bought a laptop on that price and done many better things, used data card to make calls also :D

u wont get wi-fi everywhere in india
anuj @ Aug 25, 2008
Rs. 30K for any phone is not worth, i cant believe there marketing teams and apple's marketing teams have been so dumb, that not research a possible market. Funny part i went to buy a blackberry at Airtel store and they were pushing me for iphone LoL these makes clear how many possibilities are converting to sales :D

I am happy with N82 which i got for 21k rocking phone, who needs touch screen.
Anuj @ Aug 25, 2008
BREAKING NEWS
Airtel and Vodafone as sold 101 mobile in national wide.
Now they are plan to sold 201 mobile in august month.
Happy airtel and vodafone.
If you reduce price you can sell 1 million in one week.
We are indians.
Srinath @ Aug 25, 2008
What is the use of Data Plans in iPhone? You cannot connect with PC through BT Wireless mode. I am not sure if you can browse through PC? Cant exchange files, no bulk SMS possible, no A2DP, no cut & Paste, no 3G service yet the price is Rs 30-36K.

The comedy is, when the 3G services available, the same instrument will cost lot lesser and will make the current buyers look like a fool!!
Amar @ Aug 25, 2008
Rs. 30000 for the Iphone is not worth it.

I dont think it as a good idea to for Iphone... Whats tehre yaar... How much you expect a man working on internet or new features.. Even the phone dont have good camera. Minimum 5 Mega Pixcel should be there. Otherwise its a time waste effort to look at IPHONE.
srinivasa Reddy @ Aug 25, 2008
@Anant: Please post the name of the shop in Heera Panna from where you got the iPhone for 10,150.

I'm Proud onwer of IPhone 3G

There are so many hunger starved children and people on the Indian Streets. Getting 1 day a meal is so hard for them and there are people who waste their money on buying all these high priced phones... Phone is meant for talking... How many really browse internet via phone, its very hand few. Given the phone screen size and GPRS high traffic, everyone would naturally prefer PC.

For people who wants to demonstrate their so called richness or spending power will very well for for these high priced gadgets.. less to say about bikes to babes...
