Vodafone Releases iPhone 3G Pricing
By: Tech2.com News Staff   |   Aug 20, 2008

Before announcements of official release dates and pricing, we were getting you the information. Now that the price has been officially confirmed, this is for those who would like to hear it from the horse's mouth.

Vodafone has announced the official pricing for the iPhone 3G, though Airtel hasn't made any statements yet.

The 8 GB version will cost Rs. 31,000 and the 16 GB version will cost Rs. 36,100.

Those who've pre-registered for the iPhone 3G can go to a Vodafone store today or tomorrow, and confirm their booking by paying Rs. 10,000. It is the fee for pre-booking.

They will then receive an appointment date and time starting 22nd August where they can go and pick up their iPhones.

Check out the Vodafone site for more info.

Harit Nagpal, chief marketing officer, Vodafone said, “We are not keeping margins, as these are our own stores.” Excuse me Mr. Harit Nagpal, do you think selling something at more than 125% of the cost price is "not keeping margins"?!!!!!! Moreover, you are binding people with a monthly plan of Rs. 799 and Rs. 999 even after pricing these pieces blatantly high!!!
Aman @ Aug 23, 2008
Not only boycott Iphone, also boycott Vodafone and Airtel. Lets switch to other operators. IPhone3G 8GB is being given by Apple to Airtel and Vodafone at 325$. Even if we add 5% custom duty, still 8Gb model shouldn't retail for more than Rs, 15000. Please do not fall for Vodafone's tactics of lowering the prices marginally.
Aman @ Aug 23, 2008
Vodafone reduces iphone prices. The price tag for the gadget is now pegged at Rs 29,640 for 8GB and Rs 34,580 for 16 GB.

i phone sucks
no worth for the money
it is not recommended for anyone as it coasts very high and does not worth it . as there will no proper sevice facilities and as well to get all the iphone sevices the operators will charge u heavily.
bhargav @ Aug 23, 2008
Iphone is here

and it sucks on the features hell lot of drawbacks

"Iphone Or Ufool" think what you want
just like stock market pricing of Iphone taken over by its brand name

according to me iphone basic should be priced around 15~16k with 8gb
Ishwar @ Aug 22, 2008

Say No to iPhone!

Let teach lesson to the Operators who has no logic in business.
Show them the consumer power.

i appeal to everyone not to buy iphone as it will prompt airtel and voda to reduce prices quickly so we can buy it then.. they will face empty stores tomorrow.. not even 10 will be sold nationwide in one week..

There r people ready to buy the iphone at any cost even if they say Rs. 1,00,000 these guys dont think about value for money - Airtel and vodafone r targeting these one first. Once these stupid people bought it then they will reduce the price to arond 20k then as the price droped many will buy and then again they will reduce the price to 16k and once its 16k most of them will have the iphone then they will start playing with the monthly bills... Whatever, however we r been f'd atlast...

this deal is going to be a BIG BIG!!!! loss 4 d people who buys this phone.the news channels lured people by giving them wrong information about pricing.these channels should be sued as many will face problem, who earlier booked it, by watching the price tag so high!!!
saad @ Aug 21, 2008
whis says airtel hasnt told the prices .. i recieved msgs from airtel twice regarinding the prices .... its excatly same as vodafone

The iPhone pricing in India was initially though to be subsidized below 20k. However the iPhone will be launched in the range of Rs 31000 (8GB) to 37000 (16GB). Though the demand and hype is good; such heavy pricing would discourage many potential buyers.
And if our source is to be believed, Airtel has received around 400,000 pre-registrations for the iPhone. Even if 20% of those actually decide to buy the iPhone 3G in India then Airtel would have some 80,000 orders. However it is said that Apple has provided only 25000 iPhones to Airtel initially. Thus the decision to keep the iPhone a top-end product (which it is) and thus peiced at a heavy premium.
The prices are expected to fall after diwali. Enjoy!
Iphonehelp.in @ Aug 21, 2008
guyz i think all should just wait for another week or so.....lets c how may iphones vodafone and airtel manage to sell in the 1st week....i think it wont be more than a few hundred or max a thousand nationwide....this will automatically prompt them to come out with monthly plans and installments for the phone as they have already invested in the project...so guyz chill...lets c what happens
TECHIE @ Aug 21, 2008
"iphone price is too high to buy..They showed that it will cost near about 9000 but its not. I am not going to buy iphone as it has no FM, Bluetooth with a2dp, Windows file can't work, No video recordin and many more...si its better to go for the better option like nokia has launched n96 and its cost is 26000.If u really want to buy iphone go to gaffar market in delhi.
mak @ Aug 21, 2008
The price is too high for iphone.. Well yes it has got a really big screen and touchflo .. but lacks many features that of basic phones, 3rd party applications.. So once your honey moon with the phone is over. you will just hate it as others do it now

More abuse news for iPhone lovers as Vodafone released the plans which include voice as well as data. For a new postpaid user, there are three plan options - iPhone 499 (Rs. 499), iPhone 799 (Rs. 799) and iPhone 999 (Rs. 999). On the calling front, these plans will have free 199, 249 and 299 minutes (local & STD) respectively. All local calls go at 60 paise flat while STD at Re. 1. SMS charges are 1/2/5 (local/national/international). Heavy internet users will be disappointed because there is no unlimited data plan to go for. The free data usage per month for these plans is 50MB, 250MB and 600MB.

Ridiculous Pricing !!! Apple go back to US, Voda & Airtel have no business sense. Samsung i900 omnia is much better phone thatn iphone

Well i think it is a bit steep.... just cause we in india cannot use the APPS from Itunes just as yet .. i wonder if they have started the payment gateway just as yet ... anyone know bout that .. pay in INR ?

I am really looking forward to MobileMe anyway ... and i should get it too .... even at a steep 31 K

(i've lost my phone recently ... and i think i can't wait for a price drop)

I just hope the ownership experience lives up ....

to re cap - i have 2 question

1. Itunes apps now on yet for india ?
2. 3 G when ?
3. Warranty ?
4. Can you insure it ?

stop complaining you guys. its still one of the best phones on the market. buy any decent smartphone on the market like the blackberry and ull be poorer by 25k. now add a ipod touch and ur down 40k. stop complaining and get one to know what its all about. and n u CANT get one from the US. u need something called a social security number which is like a pan number which is issued to residents.and if u come to think of it, ull end up paying $1680 plus taxes for ur plan. additionally u need to pay $200 plus tax. oh sorry $199 for those idiots who dont understand. the total cost of ownership is rs. 80000 over a 2 year period. compare that to india rs. 31000 for the phone. rs. 48000 for usage on the network (assuming an average of rs. 2000 a month, which is on the higher side) get 1 cuz i am.

nokia e71 for me!
saji @ Aug 20, 2008
Everything said and done my friends the device is still very unstable with lot of fixes still going on. Like for example no video recording and a total absence of the most obvious, the keypad.
Okay right now cost wise it is too high at about 1000 apiece. But from a very practical angle how many would be able to use it in reallife indian circumstances?
Would we want a device which always demands a 2hand use policy.
A device that has a lot of short comings apart from the ones mentioned above + also the fact you cant create or edit office documents.
A device which will need to be returned for something as simple as changing the battery?
A device which has a 2mpx camera.
Question is how many will seriously want to burn a serious hole in their pocket for a device which looks great but doesnt stand a chance against the likes of even java enabled phones and not speaking of the symbian ones.
Got to understand that at this price point the service providers are still going to charge their esteemed customers for the data usage etc etc and not gonna bundle services as we would expect.
Man its Sad & its also very Bad.

Shanky Bhai,
1. I got the sms
2. I checked up the vodafone site.
Think personally however the i phone is no competition for my nokia e51. Got oodles of features which the iphone users can only dream of atleast for sometime to come.
Think of it!
Finally i think its just the novelty factor of owning an apple phone that will drive the people to buy this phone but at this price point and with such dearth of features i dont think its worth the money when there are scores of symbian s60 and uiq phones which surely cost less and also do more and almost anything.

Rather than spending 31,000 on a phone that doesn't have a basic video recording feature I'd prefer buying a lower priced phone which has more functions than the i Phone. 36K is like a three month salary in India for a call center job. Maybe Americans should start paying more for the services so that they can afford American phones :)
Steve Jobs @@ @ Aug 20, 2008
36K is like a three month salary in India for a call center job. Maybe Americans should start paying more for the services so that they can afford American phones :)That's cheap for most people in Indian cities who routinely spend like $600 on their cell phones. In India it is all about showing off. There are too many rich people who will buy this as a toy for their kids. There is no limit to money and stupid people back home.

By the way, the concept of ipod is lost in India. Ipod stands for DAP and nobody seem to care that the original ipod is from a company
called Apple. The Apple brand recognition is almost close to zero apart from the techies who know what that company is.

Lot of people like their crackberries. They are waiting more for the crackberry bold than this thing.

But I do expect this thing to be sold like hot cakes back home. Like I said there is no limit to stupid people who will spend $700 on a
cell phone.
Steve Jobs @@ @ Aug 20, 2008
Guys, $199 for 8GB and $299 for 16 GB in USA based on 2-year contract. So we can't compare or expect same price as indian market is different. At least we should expect the price of unlocked phone at AT&T in USA which is supposed to be $599 and $699. Anything above that price seems idiotic!!
Raj @ Aug 20, 2008
Just looting indian smart phone customers.
As per AT&T web site , In future no-commitment/ no-contract iphone 8 GB costs $599 and 16 Gb costs $699. Why the heck vodafone and airtel charge huge $720 for 8gb and $830 for 16 GB ???
Listen vodafone and airtel, you will be shocked with this kind of pricing on 22nd !!
