Nokia Unveils the N96

Nokia’s much awaited, fully loaded, dual slider, the N96, has been unveiled in India almost a month and a half before the UK launch that was set to be the first. Bravo - is what I have to say. This cross between the N81 with its glossy trims and the N95’s dual slide component makes for a great handset overall.
I’ve mentioned the specs of this handset more times than is perhaps necessary but it does seem like quite an exciting handset. Take it from me, since I’ve been lucky enough to play around with a prototype. The N96 has a 2.8-inch TFT display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 16 million colors. It runs on a Dual ARM 9 264 MHz CPU and comes with 128MB RAM, 256MB storage memory and a whopping 16GB of internal memory as well as microSD card support in case you feel that 16GB is just not enough. The handset also has an accelerometer for automatically rotating the display.
For net connectivity the N96 is equipped with Wi-Fi, 3G support with HSDPA speeds, EDGE class 32, GPRS/WAP, Bluetooth with A2DP and microUSB v2.0 for data transfer. When it comes to multimedia the N96 should feel like a pro with a 5 MP auto-focus camera with Carl Zeiss optics. It’s also capable of video capture (VGA 30fps) and it comes with an LED flash which in my opinion is not a good thing since the N82 has a Xenon, but ok. Just around the camera’s lens is a kickstand that when opened allows the handset to be propped up for comfort of viewing. The N96 also has a secondary VGA videocall camera in front.
Thankfully the N96 comes equipped with a 3.5mm earphone socket that doubles as TV Out. It even has an FM radio with RDS and Visual Radio. It also has 3D stereo speakers and supports the N-Gage application for gaming. The handset comes with an inbuilt GPS module (Nokia Maps 2.0 pre-loaded) and also supports A-GPS. It also has a DVB-H TV broadcast receiver. Other features include a document reader and a built in handsfree but that’s nothing new.
The Nokia N96 comes pre-bundled with WaveSecure, an application that allows consumers to secure everything on the device wirelessly. One can save and create a back up of all data (contacts, SMS, call logs and calendar entries) through the Internet. Additionally, in the event that it is lost or stolen, WaveSecure helps remotely wipe out all data from the device to prevent misuse, lock the device remotely and even track any new SIM card inserted.
Speaking of pre-loaded features, Nokia has been gracious enough to the Indian audience by providing plenty of Bollywood freebies. The N96 will come preloaded with the movie ‘Om Shanti Om’, 50 music videos, music tracks in Hindi and English and 3 N-Gage games with an unlimited license on for the 3rd edition of Asphalt Urban. It will also have 3 country Nokia Maps that include Singapore, UAE and of course India and a 3 month Navigation license for 8 Indian cities.
The handset will hit stores at an estimated price of around Rs. 36,000 but there is no official word on the same. In case you’re wondering if this beats the iPhone due to launch in a couple of days, why don’t you be smart about it and wait till we’re done giving them a thorough once over.
The handset can be pre-booked by logging on to www.nokia.co.in/n96 and registering, though it'll be on shelves only in September. Just follow the instructions but know this - a booking amount of Rs. 4000 will need to be paid.

Prithviraj @ Aug 20, 2008
currently the only option is a workaround by jailbreaking/hacking it.
Prithviraj @ Aug 20, 2008
yes iPhone has java support but it is not for games I thik U forgot it It is for third party apps go and see the specs..presently 16GB is the biggest micro SD card in the markets so U can upgrade it later and as per some info I found that 24GB will be in the market with in 2 months..
ashik @ Aug 20, 2008
There were critical bugs and so more frequent updates were released. That is no measure of an OS.
Im all for the debate of which of the 2 phones is a better bet.. am trying to decide between the 2 myself.. but lets keep it objective.
Other no brainers like : "No virus/Trojans can hit iPhone.. Its based on Mac OS not windows mobile!!! " are ridiculous. A virus can hit any phone if some security vulnerability exists. Just the fact that its OSX derivative does not guarantee that!! Anyway I could go on and on about other such posts I see out here..
Prithviraj @ Aug 20, 2008
iPhone : does not support Java
N96: NO restriction of Memory Card to 2 GB
Fast USB & WiFi are standard on both, and makes no sense quoting marketing material
Both N96 & iPhone can support google maps
The difference between Google Maps & Nokia Maps is that Nokia Maps can give turn by turn navigation, which is not possible in Google Maps. Also Nokia maps allow you to download the complete data for a city in advance, so that minimal data fetching is required while travelling. This is especially important in India where Cellular Data connections are very slow, and no 3G yet.
Having said that, I personally prefer Google maps UI. ..

iPhone has got a Phone Book, its called Contacts, Ringer ID is there, calculator, stopwatch, all by default, shipping with the OS. In addition iPhone ships with Mail, You Tube, Weather, Stocks, Timer, all integrated in the OS, which I guess the N96 does not have.
iPhone has got a 3.5" screen which can be the bloody best torch on any mobile phone, and there are 3rd party apps which change the brightness to full and give a full white screen for a full blown torch.
And there are over 700 apps for the iPhone of which over 400 are free, which give you cool games, productivity apps and a lot more, and with the big touch screen and accelerometer you can enjoy more on the iPhone.
I won't comment on whether the iPhone is better or the N96, thats personal preference

iPhone's talk time is 10 hours, the N96 manages just 2.40 hours, you don't need a removable battery.
iPhone supports Java by default and no 3rd party app is needed.
iPhone OS has been upgraded to 2.0 and has been updated twice since to the current version 2.0.2.
Apple tests all the 3rd party apps before releasing to the public, so that they are not memory hogs, and in no way they "harm" the OS in the long run.
Utkarsh @ Aug 20, 2008
iPhone has got a 10 hour talk time and the Nokia just 2 hours 40 minutes so you don't need to replace the battery anyway.
iPhone's browser, Safari supports Java by default, no third party application is needed.
iPhone OS has just been upgraded to 2.0 and been updated twice to the current version 2.0.2.
The 3rd party apps are first tested by Apple and then released to the public, so it is ensured they don't suck up RAM and Processor.
And in no way they harm the OS in the long run.

iPhone has a talk time of 600minutes(10 hours) while the nokia manages just 220 minutes(2 hour 40 minutes), you just don't need to replace the battery.
been updated twice to the current 2.0.2 version.
iPhone ensures that the third party applications, don't suck up RAM and processor, all the applications are approved by Apple before releasing to the public, so they in no way "destroy" the iPhone OS, and by the way the Symbian platform doesn't even have 25% the number of applications available for the iPhone
The iPhone obviously has Phone Book(Contacts), Ringer ID, Calculator, Stop Watch by default, in addition it has Weather, Stocks, Ma

You CANNOT upgrade N96 to 24GB, you can just pop in 2GB for 18GB total, the iPhone has a 16GB model, normally you don't need more than that.
iPhone has got 3.5" screen against the tiny 2.8" in Nokia N96.
It has got iPhone 2.0 software, more feature rich and intuitive that Symbian.
iPhone has got Wi-Fi, and can connect to the computer with a "fast" USB 2.0 connection.
On the Nokia you have to PAY for navigation features after the 3 months and more money to use the extra navigation features, the iPhone has got Google Maps with all the features for FREE, and Google has better mapping of more cities, the Nokia service has got just couple of cities.
Utkarsh @ Aug 20, 2008
Of course virus can hit iPhone. Mac OS does get virus, if a person wanted to program a virus for the Mac OS. There is a great deal of protection, because Apple prevents applications from running well, but if you have a cracked iPhone there is no protection
yee @ Aug 20, 2008
For your kind information.
No virus/Trojans can hit iPhone.. Its based on Mac OS not windows mobile!!!
