Nokia Unveils the N96
By: Shayne Rana   |   Aug 19, 2008

Nokia’s much awaited, fully loaded, dual slider, the N96, has been unveiled in India almost a month and a half before the UK launch that was set to be the first. Bravo - is what I have to say. This cross between the N81 with its glossy trims and the N95’s dual slide component makes for a great handset overall.

I’ve mentioned the specs of this handset more times than is perhaps necessary but it does seem like quite an exciting handset. Take it from me, since I’ve been lucky enough to play around with a prototype. The N96 has a 2.8-inch TFT display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 16 million colors. It runs on a Dual ARM 9 264 MHz CPU and comes with 128MB RAM, 256MB storage memory and a whopping 16GB of internal memory as well as microSD card support in case you feel that 16GB is just not enough. The handset also has an accelerometer for automatically rotating the display.

For net connectivity the N96 is equipped with Wi-Fi, 3G support with HSDPA speeds, EDGE class 32, GPRS/WAP, Bluetooth with A2DP and microUSB v2.0 for data transfer. When it comes to multimedia the N96 should feel like a pro with a 5 MP auto-focus camera with Carl Zeiss optics. It’s also capable of video capture (VGA 30fps) and it comes with an LED flash which in my opinion is not a good thing since the N82 has a Xenon, but ok. Just around the camera’s lens is a kickstand that when opened allows the handset to be propped up for comfort of viewing. The N96 also has a secondary VGA videocall camera in front.

Thankfully the N96 comes equipped with a 3.5mm earphone socket that doubles as TV Out. It even has an FM radio with RDS and Visual Radio. It also has 3D stereo speakers and supports the N-Gage application for gaming. The handset comes with an inbuilt GPS module (Nokia Maps 2.0 pre-loaded) and also supports A-GPS. It also has a DVB-H TV broadcast receiver. Other features include a document reader and a built in handsfree but that’s nothing new.

The Nokia N96 comes pre-bundled with WaveSecure, an application that allows consumers to secure everything on the device wirelessly. One can save and create a back up of all data (contacts, SMS, call logs and calendar entries) through the Internet. Additionally, in the event that it is lost or stolen, WaveSecure helps remotely wipe out all data from the device to prevent misuse, lock the device remotely and even track any new SIM card inserted.

Speaking of pre-loaded features, Nokia has been gracious enough to the Indian audience by providing plenty of Bollywood freebies. The N96 will come preloaded with the movie ‘Om Shanti Om’, 50 music videos, music tracks in Hindi and English and 3 N-Gage games with an unlimited license on for the 3rd edition of Asphalt Urban. It will also have 3 country Nokia Maps that include Singapore, UAE and of course India and a 3 month Navigation license for 8 Indian cities.

The handset will hit stores at an estimated price of around Rs. 36,000 but there is no official word on the same. In case you’re wondering if this beats the iPhone due to launch in a couple of days, why don’t you be smart about it and wait till we’re done giving them a thorough once over.

The handset can be pre-booked by logging on to www.nokia.co.in/n96 and registering, though it'll be on shelves only in September. Just follow the instructions but know this - a booking amount of Rs. 4000 will need to be paid.

Yes, But many phones depend on the Symbian Os not only Nokia ,so How can he make some changes for just nokia itself???
ashik @ Aug 22, 2008
Dear Ashik,

FYI, Symbion is owned by Nokia!
Amar @ Aug 20, 2008
Updates U are talking about updates??/Nokia is not programming its Os ,Symbion Os is from onather company so If there is a problem with Os then that company should take care of it ..so nokia has no problem with that part and if U see the rate of updates normally symbion Os will be updated for every 4-6 months while in apple 2.0 with in 4 months 2 updates are released!!!
ashik @ Aug 20, 2008
Guys I dont know many feel that Mac is virus free!!! Do u know that there was a hacking competition between windows vista, ubuntu and Mac ..In that Mac was the first OS to be taken out of competition with in 2 minutes..I think u people forgot that ..In underground there are many codes which can pip off iPhone just go to astalavista.com and search for forums ..U can find many forums on cracking iPhone???
ashik @ Aug 20, 2008
oh talking abt bugs, nokia has the most of them and they dont even have updates to rectify them. and take it to a nokia care center to learn that it take weeks on end to get ur phone back. learnt the hard way. will never buy a nokia ever. now i have a blackberry 8320 and iphone 1g. will definitely upgrade to 3g on friday. yippie
tribal @ Aug 20, 2008
iPhone does NOT support JAVA
theres only a workaround by jailbreaking/hacking the the iPhone
Prithviraj @ Aug 20, 2008
iPhone does NOT support JAVA!!
currently the only option is a workaround by jailbreaking/hacking it.
Prithviraj @ Aug 20, 2008
@utkarsh
yes iPhone has java support but it is not for games I thik U forgot it It is for third party apps go and see the specs..presently 16GB is the biggest micro SD card in the markets so U can upgrade it later and as per some info I found that 24GB will be in the market with in 2 months..
ashik @ Aug 20, 2008
Also : statements like : "iPhone OS has been upgraded to 2.0 and has been updated twice since to the current version 2.0.2." make no sense.
There were critical bugs and so more frequent updates were released. That is no measure of an OS.
Im all for the debate of which of the 2 phones is a better bet.. am trying to decide between the 2 myself.. but lets keep it objective.
Other no brainers like : "No virus/Trojans can hit iPhone.. Its based on Mac OS not windows mobile!!! " are ridiculous. A virus can hit any phone if some security vulnerability exists. Just the fact that its OSX derivative does not guarantee that!! Anyway I could go on and on about other such posts I see out here..
Prithviraj @ Aug 20, 2008
Guys.. People: both those for iPhones & those for N96.. do get your facts right when u post.
iPhone : does not support Java
N96: NO restriction of Memory Card to 2 GB
Fast USB & WiFi are standard on both, and makes no sense quoting marketing material

Both N96 & iPhone can support google maps
The difference between Google Maps & Nokia Maps is that Nokia Maps can give turn by turn navigation, which is not possible in Google Maps. Also Nokia maps allow you to download the complete data for a city in advance, so that minimal data fetching is required while travelling. This is especially important in India where Cellular Data connections are very slow, and no 3G yet.
Having said that, I personally prefer Google maps UI. ..
Prithviraj @ Aug 20, 2008
utkarsh... n96 supports HDSC microSD cards...so I can expand it to 32GB in total...16GB internal and a 16GB microSD card... 16GB card has been succesfully tested with e90, e51 and the verdict is they run super smooth... I dont kno whether a 32GB SD card is released or no... imagine 16GB + 32GB !!!
Abhishek Gupta @ Aug 20, 2008
I am not finished Ashik.
iPhone has got a Phone Book, its called Contacts, Ringer ID is there, calculator, stopwatch, all by default, shipping with the OS. In addition iPhone ships with Mail, You Tube, Weather, Stocks, Timer, all integrated in the OS, which I guess the N96 does not have.
iPhone has got a 3.5" screen which can be the bloody best torch on any mobile phone, and there are 3rd party apps which change the brightness to full and give a full white screen for a full blown torch.
And there are over 700 apps for the iPhone of which over 400 are free, which give you cool games, productivity apps and a lot more, and with the big touch screen and accelerometer you can enjoy more on the iPhone.
I won't comment on whether the iPhone is better or the N96, thats personal preference
Utkarsh @ Aug 20, 2008
This is for ashik's second comment.
iPhone's talk time is 10 hours, the N96 manages just 2.40 hours, you don't need a removable battery.
iPhone supports Java by default and no 3rd party app is needed.
iPhone OS has been upgraded to 2.0 and has been updated twice since to the current version 2.0.2.
Apple tests all the 3rd party apps before releasing to the public, so that they are not memory hogs, and in no way they "harm" the OS in the long run.
Utkarsh @ Aug 20, 2008
This one is for "ashik's" second comment.
iPhone has got a 10 hour talk time and the Nokia just 2 hours 40 minutes so you don't need to replace the battery anyway.
iPhone's browser, Safari supports Java by default, no third party application is needed.
iPhone OS has just been upgraded to 2.0 and been updated twice to the current version 2.0.2.
The 3rd party apps are first tested by Apple and then released to the public, so it is ensured they don't suck up RAM and Processor.
And in no way they harm the OS in the long run.
Utkarsh @ Aug 20, 2008
This one is for "ashik's" second comment.
iPhone has a talk time of 600minutes(10 hours) while the nokia manages just 220 minutes(2 hour 40 minutes), you just don't need to replace the battery.
been updated twice to the current 2.0.2 version.
iPhone ensures that the third party applications, don't suck up RAM and processor, all the applications are approved by Apple before releasing to the public, so they in no way "destroy" the iPhone OS, and by the way the Symbian platform doesn't even have 25% the number of applications available for the iPhone
The iPhone obviously has Phone Book(Contacts), Ringer ID, Calculator, Stop Watch by default, in addition it has Weather, Stocks, Ma
Utkarsh @ Aug 20, 2008
We need a contest :)
.:SpArK:. @ Aug 20, 2008
This is in reply to "ashik's" comment which is full of extremely wrong information, I guess people should research before they post.
You CANNOT upgrade N96 to 24GB, you can just pop in 2GB for 18GB total, the iPhone has a 16GB model, normally you don't need more than that.
iPhone has got 3.5" screen against the tiny 2.8" in Nokia N96.
It has got iPhone 2.0 software, more feature rich and intuitive that Symbian.
iPhone has got Wi-Fi, and can connect to the computer with a "fast" USB 2.0 connection.
On the Nokia you have to PAY for navigation features after the 3 months and more money to use the extra navigation features, the iPhone has got Google Maps with all the features for FREE, and Google has better mapping of more cities, the Nokia service has got just couple of cities.
Utkarsh @ Aug 20, 2008
Rags:
Of course virus can hit iPhone. Mac OS does get virus, if a person wanted to program a virus for the Mac OS. There is a great deal of protection, because Apple prevents applications from running well, but if you have a cracked iPhone there is no protection
yee @ Aug 20, 2008
Ashik:
For your kind information.
No virus/Trojans can hit iPhone.. Its based on Mac OS not windows mobile!!!
Know before you write.
Rags @ Aug 20, 2008
THIS WILL KILL EXISTING MARKET FOR i - PHONE FOR SURE BUT THE HANDSET SHOULD NOT DEPRESS THE CONSUMER FOR DELAY IN LAUNCH AS i - PHONE HAS BEEN DOING, RESULTING IN THIS HUGE LOSS DUE TO LAUNCH OF N96 BY NOKIA
SHISHIR TODI @ Aug 20, 2008
same kind off stale styling by nokia....no xenon flash, no image stabiliser .......waste for this price
ashwin dias @ Aug 20, 2008
i have to agree with amar on this one !

the price is probitive for something without all those.
Rishi @ Aug 20, 2008
does it have a touch screen? not mentioned, what a review is this? it seems like an ad by nokia
Shaheen @ Aug 20, 2008
iphone will beat it in terms of price. tats for sure!
Shaheen @ Aug 20, 2008
I love this piece guys than iPhone... iPhone3G is not having an expandable memory It is shipped in just 2 models 8GB and 16GB, while N96 can be expandable to 24GB..8GB costs around 30K while 16GB is around 36K...battery is non-replacable which is not the case in N96..no java support but should wait for a third party support for that one while in N96 its not the case its Os supports java...N96 has an updated Os while still many third party applications are being developed for iPhone(this is major setback because sometimes they may destroy the iPhone Os in long run by slowing down or gabbing up the RAM memory )... iPhone doesn.t have the basic features like phonebook, ringerId, flashlight, calculator, stopwatch(ofcourse they can be developed with third party members)
ashik @ Aug 19, 2008
35K for 16 GB asame as iPhone,2.8LCD screen bigger than iPhone, expandable to 24GB, Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 Operating System, 5MP camera with flash and video lights at 30 frames/sec, can play flash video, high-speed USB 2.0 connection, WLAN and HSDPA, built-in 3D stereo, phone supports Nokia Maps application which offers maps with urban details and satellite views and has upgrade options such as City Guides, turn-by-turn pedestrian mode and voice-guided car navigation, This is not iPhone competitor it is iPhone killer...hahahah
ashik @ Aug 19, 2008
One more thing Can u certify that all third party applications are good applications there may be some virus or trogens which not only affect iPhone but also the computer u'll connect it with.and without front camera what is the use of video-conferencing??...Guys the earphonest they are shipping it with are the actual earphones of iPod so no special earphones for this only model??(according to me these earphones lack the beat and pump in them so I bought Sennheiser earphones worth 4K extra for my iPod classic) Underground has claimed they have developed some codes to crack the iPhon and they term as iPhone killer..why to get in such a mess???be with Nokia an old friend
ashik @ Aug 19, 2008
its superb, and one of the world 's best cell phone, with the world class features ,
chaudhary @ Aug 19, 2008
Price is really prohibitive for such phones.

36K without QWERTY Keyboard nor Touch Screen or VGA Display!!!!!

This phone again will become another N95 legacy!
Amar @ Aug 19, 2008
I wish we had some kind of technology where I could see everyones face who are waiting for IPhone and it is launched with massive price.

i want to feel the pain and watch tears rolling down all over the country.. muwhahahah.
Anshuman @ Aug 19, 2008
so is iPhone going to be around 30000 (thirty thousand) to beat this?
Anshuman @ Aug 19, 2008
We need a contest about this one Tech2 What say ?
OJ @ Aug 19, 2008
I bet only a 10th of those features will be used due to the total lack of navigation and piss poor software design.

ijah420 says no matter how many features you pack into a device... if its hard to use for the average user its not worth beans! This ain't no iPhone period dot end of story. SORRY! What about Apps?

ps. Whats American retail? What's the contract? What carriers? So many unanswered questions
ijah420 @ Aug 19, 2008
Now THIS is a phone!
Didn't expect the multimedia part!Good show Nokia
