Schoolgirl's Orkut Profile Misused
By: Priyanka Pradhan   |   Feb 08, 2007

Google-owned social networking site, Orkut, has landed itself in more trouble, after a malicious profile of a Delhi schoolgirl was found to be uploaded on the site. Miscreants have posted obscene photographs and contact details such as her home address and telephone numbers on the profile, using suggestive names like 'sex teacher' for her.

The matter came to light after the girl's family started receiving vulgar calls and her father approached the Cyber Cell of Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing. Delhi police sources say the girl is a student in a South Delhi school. Her father told the police that somebody has misused the social networking website to fake her profile and circulate obscene stuff on her profile. The family received the first call almost a month back where the caller wanted to speak to her, following a slew of similar calls, referring to Orkut.

This incident follows the complaint filed by a 23 year old Delhi based air hostess, whose profile on Orkut was misused by pranksters. Google Inc. has not commented on either of the cases yet.

TO DEAL WITH SUCH TYPE OF CASES THERE SHOULD BE A SPECIAL CELL OF CRIME BRANCH OFFICIALS AND YOUNGER GENERATION GROUP WHICH MUST GO HAND IN HAND IN SOLVING SUCH PROBLEMS.YOUNGER GENERATION GROUP MUST CONSIST OF STUDENTS OR INTERESTING ONES FROM EACH LOCAL AREA.BECAUSE CITIZENS SHOULD BE EQUALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR REMOVING THE GARBAGE FROM SOCIETY.
FAMILY OF GIRL SHOULD FEEL PROUD THAT THEY CAME OUT AND COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS,AS MANY SUCH CASES ARE JUST NOT BEEN DISCUSSED.ME AS WELL AS WHOLE NATION IS WITH YOU ALL

Such incidents of misusing information, and many more that go unnoticed most of the times, are constant reminders that community sites like Orkut etc. have to work progressively to ensure that security of all its members is given utmost importance.
These sites bring people together agreed, but the fear of having your pictures and your personal information displayed to unknown people poses itself as such a danger to youngsters.
The cyber police have to push these community sites to enable functions, Eg: Wherein pictures cannot be copied and pasted, which generally leads to misuse...
