Even though Area 51 didn’t go down very well with the crowds, I appreciated what Midway was trying to accomplish with this game. Sure it wasn’t a Halo killer (although I’m sure they’d hoped otherwise) and it boasted of an extremely clichéd, unimaginative and nonsensical plot, but at the end of the day, it was a perfectly enjoyable mindless shooter and that, ladies and gentlemen, is what developer Midway is hoping to create once again with BlackSite: Area 51 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Now, even though the game is being developed by Midway, is a first person shooter, involves aliens and takes place in Area 51, Midway claims BlackSite is not a direct sequel to Area 51 (they could have fooled us eh?). While Area 51 was fast paced and entertaining, it was bogged down by a highly stupid and shallow plot, so this time round, Midway are hoping to rectify that by roping in Susan o Connor (who by the way is behind the story of Gears of War) to pen down the script for this game, which by the way unfolds without any cutscenes from a firs person perspective (just like in Half Life).
Remember all those cases of people being kidnapped by aliens? Turns out that a big load of poo and they’re actually being used as guinea pigs in nefarious experiments conducted by the US government who hope to clone the perfect super soldier (at this point I’m guessing Susan really didn’t exert her gray matter here). As expected, things don’t go as planned and these guinea pigs, who call themselves "the reborn", have busted out of captivity and there’s only one thing on their mind... retribution. With all this hell about to break loose you and your squad are sent in to take care of matters (by any means necessary off course) and put a lid on the situation before it spirals out of control.
