Nokia N96: Hands On!
By: Laiq Qureshi   |   Sep 09, 2008

The much anticipated successor to the N95 was officially announced by Nokia today at Taj Mahal Hotel, Colaba. Yes, I am talking about the N96, which is expected to be available in stores from September 16.

We had a chance to get up close with the phone, and we thought we’ll give you a sneak preview of some of its most important features.

My first impression of the phone must be a pretty universal observation, which is its strong resemblance to the N81. It does look very much like the N81; but the width has been altered to accommodate a larger screen. The phone feels a bit heavy, even though it's shed some of the unnecessary flab of the N95.

The inbuilt speakers have been shifted to the bottom of the phone, and instead of the miniUSB interface (as in the N95), the N96 has microUSB, the new industry standard.

Please comment on the battery life as wel,
as it was pathetic on the N95.
Piyush Bhageria @ Sep 14, 2008
Still too much for a phone which is an upgrade of N95 without QWERTY, VGA Screen, Touch Screen etc...

Can be priced at 25K to get more reach. Will become popular after 6 months or 1 year, people will give a miss today but after 6 months you would have many competing products in the market

I suppose those who prefer to have the iPhone also must be people who don't mind EVER transferring anything via bluetooth, and prefer not to have a memory card slot, and dont mind NOT being able to delete individual messages (only entire conversations).

Besides it doesn't have autofocus or video recording in the already pretty below-par 2mp camera, no multiple sms-forwarding, no turn-by-turn GPS navigation, and no FM radio.
Any half-decent phone would have all these rather BASIC features that the iPhone doesn't.

If you still intend to waste money on the iPhone just for the interface, then most rightly you must be either 1. stupid or 2. an apple Fanboy ... oh wait... forgot they're the same thing.

IPhone 3G is Best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mohit Khosla @ Sep 12, 2008
@ JAKE......iphone is incomparable .....what is the freaking new thing in n96....u have been using symbian s60 interface for so many years ..just purchase n96 because it comes with some lollipops .....take a break and meet a psychiatrist as soon as possible ...iphone has everything except a 5mp camera and that cam is of no use in n96 because in a few days when the plastic body will get scratched its pic clearity will become like you(worst)..after that get the body cover changed for 3-4k,isnt it maintenance cost.....iphone is far far far better then these nokia candies but only htc can be chosen against an iphone...so go and wash ur face and dont ever post ur stupid comments...and no need to be sorry for calling us retards i can understand a retard thinks others r like himself only..
shashank @ Sep 12, 2008
To All the loosers Below, Iphone is Crap! Just because Its in the News and you have Heard about it and its the only Phone that comes to your, Poor retarded Head of yours, Does not make this Phone bad. Its just and Over Priced phone, Iphone is a Monopoly. Its Not a Bad Phone but if you take into consideration the maintainance Cost of the Iphone (Oh you poor Retarded people have not heard about the maintaince cost yet ?) WOW! Thats why reliance was able to fool all us Indians, With their 1st Rs 500 Scheme! We don't bother about the terms and conditions!

Thats the problem. Luckily your on the Internet right now, just go ahead and Google the Info and you will realise what i'm talking about. Sorry About calling You people Retards!
Jake @ Sep 12, 2008
Lets inform Mr Laiq Qureshi, N95 is obselete! N95 - 8Gb has everything the N96 has! For 24K mobile Store rate! Why would someone pay 35k for 8Gb more built in Memory ??? And an empty card slot ? I could Buy a 1 TB Hard Disk and carry around for that price difference! Anyway Like the 1TB hard disk would not be of any use with out a computer the same way 16 + 8 Gb Will not be of much use! I own a N95 8GB, I have over 2k Photos and Plenty of hours of video in *.mp4 format! and i still have 1.3Gb Free! After 9months Of without Deleting Usage! Beat that!

Your review is not bad but, Please get your facts Right. please do not compare a ferrari's engine with a Lamborghini, they are pretty much in a class of their own!

Thanx!
Niral @ Sep 12, 2008
larger screen wont matter as long as nokia keeps the screen resolution same. even these day one can find the same 320x240 screen resolution in a phone of 7grands. web browsing will be too pathetic in this resolution. at this cost the screen resolution should be at least VGA(640x480). iphone excels in this regard.
anil @ Sep 11, 2008
D ont worry prices will be down soon
Tom @ Sep 11, 2008
i can buy 2 n95 in this much price.....what for what i pay double price just memory? n95 can support micro sd upto 8gb....and what the hell is use of 24 gb in a cell phome.???
fin @ Sep 11, 2008
ban n96 in india..
jim @ Sep 11, 2008
35k! for a phone u have to be mentally retarded to buy a mobile phone for that money......typical NOKIA crap over priced, overhyped .....u can buy a laptop in that money.........similar to the highway robbery Airtel and vodaphone are doing with iphone
Rahul @ Sep 11, 2008
never spend so much money on samsung or LG phones.....they dont worth it....only SE and Nokia are worth of money....
and iphone is the BEST...wait til october it will be down to 25k...cause airtel has to finish its target stock b4 next july....cos aplle will surely launch a new iphone then so airtel has to drop the prices....
shashank @ Sep 10, 2008
BS...iphone and n96 are total crap. the only mobile worth mentioning right now in samsung touchwiz. and if u can wait for some time, then wait for SE xperia
sourabh @ Sep 10, 2008
piece of crap
firan @ Sep 10, 2008
yup....true
abhi @ Sep 10, 2008
ya true .....only mentally ill person will choose this one rather than apple iphone.....
ritika @ Sep 10, 2008
this is the worst phone i have ever seen
akshay @ Sep 10, 2008
I liked the teaser, hope to read the review soon Laiq!!
Unnati @ Sep 10, 2008
iphone has all best things loaded on it inspite of a cam...but the camera in n96 will not give good results after some tme bcos the camera has the crap plastic on it....it should have been with a shutter....this minor thing can cause the change....and 16 gb memory on iphone is a lot enough...it has much larger screen and includes an ipod in it....wait till diwali iphone will drop down to 25k....

those who just like nokia n series should wait for n85 or n79....these fones have pretty good features compared to n96 tooo.......n96 is no good its just a memory giant....soon there will be SE c905 8mp cam phone and it will be launched cheaper than n96....think urself....
akshay @ Sep 10, 2008
Its too much good and much better than i phone because it has everything that a simple user and a amerr user will like .we should choose iphone because it is only superficially beautifull and having on real value .in for n96 will be much better.i think its a marvel of nokia's technology
Sunil parmar @ Sep 10, 2008
Well a good phone & the price seems to be justified when you see the iphone and compare its features with the N96
Rahul @ Sep 10, 2008
Not many features more than the present ones(N95 etc)
but better than i phone
RAVI @ Sep 10, 2008
Disappointing...

No cover for camera lens.. I wonder why they go all the way and forget to include even the simplest things.

These days, i feel nokia has the worst product configuration in the market. The feature sets in mobiles (even in the same series) are very disjointed. Instead of building up on features of a previous model, it takes away some and then adds some.. Crazy really.

Nokia standards are dropping, like a previous comment said
halcyon @ Sep 10, 2008
Nokia has taken the iphone route in pricing the N96 way beyond. For those really particular, i suppose a N95 8GB can perform 85% of tasks/functions that the N96 can do for approximately 13k less..!!

Rather than using this as an oppurtunity and leading the way, Nokia has followed Iphone/Airtel in overpricing the N96..!!
sam @ Sep 10, 2008
this phone cost 36k in chd.
frankly speaking there is no worth in purchasing this phone. better go for n95 4 18.5k.
n96 has nothin spcl in it....its camera doesn't even have a shutter .....will u pay 36k bucks 4 such a crap...u can get a good configured dell laptop in this price. camera wil be of no use when its plastic cover gets scratched? at least n95 has a shutter 4 cam.
those who like throwing money and tasting all the new stuff go for it....its made for u people only....but intelligent ones will think b4 purchasing it....can any1 use up 24gb of space its more than enough....those who purchase this phone better think about iphone no matter it is costly but it is more worthful than this...as far as camera is concerned it is not goin to last gud unless u care more 4 d fone than urself
akshay @ Sep 10, 2008
Loads better than the Iphone....
Namit @ Sep 10, 2008
It look Great ......

can any tell me the cost of the phone in India....
Rohith @ Sep 10, 2008
I still wanna wait for GSM black berry thunder before I take a decision as I want to upgrade from E61 only to real good phone with good email-iphone disappoints -cant wait to check out N96
sunil @ Sep 10, 2008
If you have any N-Series Nokia Phone, there is very little reason for you to upgrade to N96. Unless you are the type whose "has to buy" the latest, in which case try the iPhone (though I dont recommend it as the price, hype compared to the features just do not match). You can try the iPhone in case you are tired of the same old Nokia OS and appearance.
Coorporate users, please wait for the Blackberry Thunder. However I am not sure if they are going to launch the GSM version.
Gman @ Sep 10, 2008
N-96 is just another phone, it would never be the flagship n95 was, cause it is simply not having much new features, n79 though kicks ass.
Nokia standards are dropping.
Amritaansh Verma @ Sep 10, 2008
i would still prefer iphone as N96 does not have "style" , "touch" and itunes application
vishal @ Sep 10, 2008
looking wise its damm good!!!!!!!!!!!
Ruchi @ Sep 10, 2008

Raghav Bhalla @ Sep 10, 2008
