Battlefield Bad Company 2 MP Beta Impressions

I can think of a lot of words to describe the Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta but “fun” certainly wouldn’t be one of them. I’ve always loved the Battlefield series for their intense and not to mention vast multiplayer action but so far BFBC2 has left me a tad disappointed.
Sure this is the closed beta and all but the game looks just plain ugly. Everything is dull and washed out. Character models aren’t too impressive and gun detail is appalling. The destruction isn’t what I had hoped as well. I for one was never too kicked about the destruction in Battlefield Bad Company since that was just a tad superficial for my taste. Anyway I had hoped BFBC2 would improve on the destruction a notch but it seems even worse than before. I mean using a tank I can destroy an entire building but I can’t blow up a simple barricade blocking my path? Nice!
I admit I’ve been playing MW2’s MP a lot and maybe that’s thoroughly spoilt me but the weapons in this game just feel awful. The first thing that annoys the crap out of me is the overdone first person bobbing that was a major annoyance in Battlefield Bad Company as well. The guns sounded pretty authentic but I hated the way they controlled. For one there was too much recoil in the assault rifles and aiming down the site just felt awkward and clunky.
The only game mode available in the Beta is a variant of Attack and Defend called Rush where in one team has to defend the base while the other has to bomb certain crates hidden in the base. Once a bomb is set you will have a small window to disarm it but you must move fast and tread carefully. This game mode while being pretty intense takes way too long to get into. You see the map is actually pretty huge and as an attacker you have to make your way all the way over to the defender’s side via a vehicle since it takes ages to walk. Plus there are snipers everywhere so walking is pretty suicidal. I for one am not a huge fan of vehicles in MP games since I feel it tends to dilute the action and that’s exactly what I felt in this game. Half the round was basically a Tank fest where everyone was just running around in tanks shooting the crap out of each other. Once I spawned as a defender I actually started enjoying myself since I got to use my weapons instead of just rely on overpowered vehicles.
The game offers four classes to choose from - medic, engineer, recon, and assault - each of which have their strengths and weaknesses. The engineer while lacking in firepower a bit can repair your tank saving you from a fiery death. The medic while not a frontline soldier can revive your dead ass using his defibrillator making him a valuable ally on the battlefield.
The thing with most Battlefield games is that they take some time to get used to. If you think you can just jump in a game and own everyone, you’re dead wrong. You have to master your class, learn the map and most importantly learn how to play as a team as opposed to the whole Lone Wolf attitude rampant in Modern Warfare 2.
