Forget everything you've heard about the BlackBerrys of old. Nothing is the same anymore as the company is seemingly undergoing a drastic change and is desperately trying to reach out to today’s media-hungry mobile user. And I believe they’re on the right track. The BlackBerry Bold was launched only recently in the country with providers such as Vodafone, Airtel, and Reliance, and here’s a quick preview.
Design
The design does justice to the name – it does have a rather ‘bold’ feel. The rear panel finish gives it a very elegant look and the overall chrome and black color scheme is quite attractive. The real eye-catcher is the superb 480 x 320 pixel display that’s large enough for you to watch videos in comfort.
The ‘Pearl’ trackball is handy for quick navigation. Initially I was not too happy with the keypad as my stubby fingers found the keys a little small for easy typing. But after some time it got easier.
Don’t presume that the Bold is in any way a slim or light handset. Its 14mm thick and weighs 133g, but this in no way is a constraint in terms of its overall look and feel. If anything it feels sturdy. Everything about the external connectivity is standard, from the 3.5mm earphone socket to the mini USB 2.0 connector and microSD card slot. RIM has very smartly kept things universal.
Features
The Bold’s interface is new and stylishly designed to give the handset a funky yet professional feel. It's quite well-equipped and is not to be mistaken for an all-business device. No siree. The Bold is an all-in-one handset that's designed to excite all mobile phone users, though it would definitely make more sense to an existing BlackBerry user.
