Fly SX210 Hummer
By: Laiq Qureshi   |   May 08, 2008
  • 2.5
Comes with TV-out
Has FM recording scheduler
Network problem
Voice reception choppy
Sluggish user interface
Plagued by quirks
Touchscreen redundant

We have seen Fly fight off the competition in the mobile phone vertical in India. Despite a good and viable distribution channel, the only other place Meridian Mobile seems to be concentrating is retail margin pushing. I was told the company plans to use channel partners (both retail and distribution) to push its mobiles. But I see no glowing signboards, no TV spots with Malaika Arora (yes, she's the brand ambassador), nothing at all. That too for what I understand is its flagship product – the Hummer.

I think it's an attention-grabbing gimmick when a mobile phone company buys a merchandising license from General Motors and comes out with the catchily-named Hummer. More so because the design of the phone is entirely independent of the hype surrounding the name. The Hummer (the phone, I mean) has no visible traits of the SUV. I expected a solid-body encasing at least. The finish is decent, but I would have liked to say 'excellent' or 'robust'. The Hummer comes in three colors; the one we got was a military camouflage green.

A bit of aliasing or moire pattern would have been a treat (as in the MotoRAZR V8), but we have to contend with a not so elegant finish. The phone is a slider, but the face is absent of any ridges to aid the slide. This makes it a bit difficult to push the phone up. Many a times your thumb will end up straining against the screen and even slipping off altogether.

The keypad is mildly recessed and responsive enough. The buttons are evenly spaced, and nails or no nails makes no difference, you will find the keypad to be the most perfectly designed element of the phone. Having said that, one would expect messaging and other functions of the keypad to be fun. But unfortunately the phone's sluggish performance sort of kills the experience.

The right side of the Hummer is bare save an IR port, while the left has only the volume keys and a single proprietary slot for USB, headphones, and charging. I forgot the charger on a visit to Goa, and I couldn't locate one even in the whole of Calangute and Baga. This is exactly why it's necessary to stick to an industry standard. A simple miniUSB interface would have been much appreciated.

Few dez back I bought this FLY-SX210 handset. This handsetset is a good handset. Touch screen, FM , MP3 player , 2MP camera...lots of other stuff but the major problem is fly's touch screen is too sensitive. My touch screen broke down in pocket. Although my handset have fallen frfom my pocket several times but the handset is working good. The major problem is with the reception of signals. Some times the voice is so much creepy. You can hardly understand what other fellow is saying. The another problem that i found out is the loudspeker, it can went on in middle of the call with ot touching any thing. Plzz do not go for factory setting if you tochscreen is not working then your handset will get hang and then you can not do anything. You can just recive call but wont be able to make any cal

Just after using this fancy looking instrument for 3 months, it's giving me lot of trouble. Cannot make any calls as my voice doesn't get through.

A remote service center with just one person to cater to the entire city, Loads of customers having all sorts of grievances.
I had to bribe the guy to fix it the same day, otherwise it would have taken at lease 3 days to even look at it.
nandlal wadhwani @ May 25, 2008
Priced at 7,500 rs. this has a few nice features. Like being light weight, handwriting recognition (one character at a time), nice graphics and touchscreen.

Downside is that only 100 text messages can reside in the phone although there is ample storage. It wouldn't be easy to locate a service center and subsequently. Accessories aren't easily available in the market as well.
nandlal wadhwani @ May 21, 2008
can u tell me da latest cost with bill of this phone and if this phone comes with EDGE?
Anish @ May 18, 2008
hummer has no clock or alarm or vibration?????
edel @ May 14, 2008
What is the price? Can you download the Video Recording in comman format
Atul Bhalerao @ May 14, 2008
...and radio sound quality is the best that i have hear so far. u can record live radio, even schedule a radio recording. camera records video in both 3gp and mp4 format. honestly tell me how many phones can record video in mp4 format? i dont how u reviewed this phone, may be u got an outdated version. try reviewing it again and see the difference. so all ppl please dont listen to what mr qureshi is sayin (no offence). just go to market and see for ur self whether this phone deserves 2.5/5 or 4.5/5.
the only problem that i got is that 95% of games dont run on it bcos its touch screen. and second the vibration is way too low. u cannot feel the vibration is ur pocket when the phone is ringing. other than these two problems the phone ROCKS. believe me i had k790i before this one.
sourabh @ May 12, 2008
dear mr. Laiq Qureshi, looks like u didnt get paid to write this review. i mean common, i m using this phone for the last 4 months and i absolutely love it. there is NO SLUGISHNESS at all. even when i open hundreds of songs in my 1gb micro sd cards. and the navigation is very intuitive, attractive and swift. its waaaaaaay faster than n-series phones of nokia. and the music quality is also very good tho not excellent but its better than se k790i. yes i had se k790i previously and fly hummer beats the crap out of it in every department except voice clarity. the camera is also very and has so many settings that u can customize to get the perfect shot. same goes for music too..its is 3D sound option, equalizer and karaoke function. the touchscreen is also very responsive. ..
sourabh @ May 12, 2008
hallo
