Sony Ericsson W995 Mobile Phone
By: Shayne Rana   |   Jul 04, 2009
  • 4.5
Great designed
Good audio
Good Camera
Plenty of free games and Apps
Bundled with 8GB M2 card and portable speaker
No document reader

The latest from Sony Ericsson’s Walkman branded mobile handsets is the uber-cool slider, the W995 that’s also loaded with an 8MP shooter. So from music to pictures, how does the W995 fare? Allow me to give you my opinion.

Form Factor
I won’t say it’s sexy because I think that would feminize the handset just a little bit and although I have seen a girl use it, I’m of the strong opinion, and I say this without a hint of a sexist syllable, that this looks and feels like a guys handset. It’s slick with a super smooth pop slider, has a 2.6-inch TFT LCD with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 256K colors with an accelerometer for specific screens. The keys are well laid out under the display around the large five way nav-pad. The same goes for the main keypad. The keys are properly spaced and most conducive to speedy typing. A VGA camera is located above the display for video calls and a rather responsive light sensor is just a little to its side.

On one side is Sony Ericsson’s ‘infamous’ all-in one port, but wait, this time around, they’ve also included a secondary 3.5mm earphone socket on the top of the handset. This way you can listen to music while charging the phone. The handsfree connector also has a 3.5mm socket. A Walkman key that takes you straight to the music player is also located on the same side. The M2 card hot-swap slot is just under the rear panel on the same side. On the opposite side is where you’ll find a dedicated camera key, volume/zoom keys and dedicated music keys for playing/pausing and skipping tracks.

Aside from the 8 megapixel camera lens and LED flash (that doubles as a torch) that can be found at the back, Sony Ericsson has also included a prop up stand. This will allow you to prop the handset up and enjoy your videos or music via the handset’s stereo speakers at the bottom and top a little bit more comfortably.

Also included in the packaging is Sony Ericsson’s Pocket Home Theater portable speaker, It’s very light weight and provides kick-ass sound that really enhances the whole W995 bundle. Of course you can use it with any other SE handset but it’s bundled with this one along with an 8GB M2 card. BRILLIANT!

Features and Performance
Interface
There’s still absolutely nothing new with the Sony Ericsson UI. It’s exactly the same with animations galore as part of almost all preloaded themes. The Accelerometer still only works with specific features like the browser and media options. So like I said, nothing new, but I’m not really complaining. Sure I’d like to so something different, but the W995 is smooth and relatively quick when it comes to activating functions etc. so no worries. Messaging via the conversations feature is a lot easier than simple 'Reply to'.

All of you who say that Samsung is better because touch screen...Well, i had both Samsung Ultra Touch AND SE W995. All i have to say is that i had the ultra touch in my trouser pocket 2 times, alltogether for 'bout 2 hrs, and after that it was really in bad condition, it looked 4 years old, and the touchscreen, well, it isn't as good as it is said to be, it is difficult to write messages with it, and very often you hit the wrong gadgets and so on. I am happy that i got rid of the ultra touch, i don't mean to disrespect Samsung, they make good products, but their phones, naah.... I'm so happy i got the SE W995, there isn't a thing that is bad in it, absolutely nothing, of course, it depends what you want to do with it. W995 = Simply a Great Phone

vimal @ Jul 18, 2009
No touch screen, and poor battery. its not worth 26K. It is not worth more than 16K in my opinion.
Guys, when is the samsung jet getting available ? I heard its about 20K in price, and has cool features.
jitu @ Jul 16, 2009
it is good model please send me its feachers & price also
ketki m shah @ Jul 16, 2009
Samsung Star with similar specs (except 8MP camera, it has 3.2MP camera), touch screen and 8GB card is available for 10k.
You must be a fool to pay 10-20K extra for handsets with slightly bigger camera, which is useless anyway, try clicking and enlarging photos.
Grow up guys.

tarang @ Jul 10, 2009
the sliding mechanism works perfectly and the phone feels pretty solid. i have a w705 too so i know what i am saying :) although it's a bit heavy on your pocket (no pun intended) fits nicely in your pocket . it comes with the 77 ones and not the nc ones. battery lasts around 1.5 to 2 days (i mainly use it for music and internet browsing. sometimes the gps and google maps as well. and yes, an occasional call as well). the best part is, it doesn't attract unwanted attention as it is not too flashy. email setup was easy. i wonder why it doesn't come with a compass application (it's the in thing these days) and if you still don't like it, there's always nokia, samsung and lg
rohit @ Jul 08, 2009
Homes - Thanks.
The reason I didn't mention the build quality was because there wasn't much to talk about. The hardware had no issues, especially with the slide, even after i spent many a-waking hour pushing it up and down (literally) it's become a habit when testing sliders.
Shayne @ Jul 08, 2009
Nice review but you missed the most important concern with SE phones these days - build quality. How is the hardware holding up, specially the slider mechanism.
Also which headphones does SE ship this phone with, HPM-88 or 77. There was news that some regions will be getting the noise canceling HPM-88 headphones bundled with this phone.
Homes @ Jul 07, 2009

Nothing new i think not good
Tariq khan makronia @ Jul 06, 2009
yah its looking very sexy and a nice phone and for video calls the front side camera should be more resoution and how much price it is?
Kalyan Chakravarthi @ Jul 06, 2009
Good Try! But again failed to impress.Nothing new for this price tag.8.0megapixel camera concept is useless in mobile without optical zoom.Better to buy cybershot.2.6inch screen is joke now a days.Sony ericsson is past now, running 2-3yrs slow.I am quite happy with nokia 5800,resonable price for all the features.Sony Ericsson better luck next time, just wait and watch how many handsets you can sale.
Shiladitya @ Jul 06, 2009
does this phone have a 3.5 mm jack ???

Anurag @ Jul 05, 2009
i must say after a long time a impressive pone by se
kapil @ Jul 05, 2009
phone is overpriced but the built is brilliant .
psk @ Jul 05, 2009
W995 is a brilliant phone. The music quality is best compared to any handheld device.
Manish Das @ Jul 05, 2009
Considering Iphone 3G is available for RS 28000 this SE phone is overpriced. I think around 18000 it would be a good phone to own.
Kintan @ Jul 04, 2009
definitely this mobile would have given competition to other same class mobiles if it would have been for the price under 20k so eventually
not really worth 26k
now a days touch screen mobiles are in the range of 10k to 20k so this is definitely not the best buy
nilesh @ Jul 04, 2009
price is high indeed!
Shaheen @ Jul 04, 2009
bought this 3 days ago. i was not really a SE ericsson fan and had never used a SE phone as my primary phone. but this one is a real good one. mind you, it's still not a smart phone but it's still a pretty decent multimedia phone. battery is 930mAh, could have been better and i also miss the dictionary and 'set song as ringtone - right within the music player' options. but i guess these are not available on other SE phones as well. music is brilliant ant that free speaker is sweet! haven't really played with the camera. media go for transferring movies and songs is slow so i directly copied all the songs on the card. outlook synchronization worked well. wifi works good. included games are fun to play. google maps works like a charm. overall a very good phone though on a pricier side.
rohit @ Jul 04, 2009
sony ericsson is best with like these handsets. they were bringing nice handsets,,, they are bringing nice handsets and they will bring nice handsets
maninder singh @ Jul 04, 2009
I use nothing else but SE.
This one looks gr8 except the price is on the higher side :(
prashant @ Jul 04, 2009
IT'S REALLY WORTH IT DUDE.
SANJEEV @ Jul 04, 2009
Price is good. Design and construction is Great. Camera is good(A XENON flash would be a killer). But why Sony removed the MegaBass(TM) feature from the new walkman versions? I really wanted to buy it but without Megabass I won't. Anyway very very good device.
Saurav @ Jul 04, 2009
great camera ,best music player and quality, value for money.
Harish @ Jul 04, 2009
i m afraid se has lost its technology to innovate specially in case of touch AND BATTERY LIFE...........& MOREOVER THEIR PRICE TAG IS ALSO ON A VERY HIGH RANGE.
SOMETIME AGO I HAD BOUGHT P990I BUT IT WAS SHOCKING THAT IT WAS THIRDCLASS...............SO PLZ.....DON,T RELY ON SE. FOR EVER
