BlackBerry Pearl 8100

Slim, great looking Smartphone
Strong email functionality
'Pearl' better than thumb wheel
Camera
Standard Mini-USB slot
Cramped keyboard keys
Plain vanilla UI after main menu
Browser ruins page formatting
Unimpressive camera quality
No video recording
Doesn't recharge via standard USB

BlackBerry handhelds have always been targeted at business professionals who rely heavily on email. Features that made the BlackBerrys different from conventional phones were the focus on sending and receiving email, being called 'email phones', and the full QWERTY keyboard with the thumb wheel that has recently lead to a recognized condition at work, called the 'BlackBerry Thumb' for which a 'BlackBerry Balm' has also been developed.

But the BlackBerrys lacked more mainstream features that made it very unpopular amongst non-business consumers, such as a camera and a media player, along with a friendlier-to-use interface. Devices from other manufacturers have had all of these features, along with a workable email solution, so Research In Motion (RIM) has developed the latest BlackBerry 8100, a.k.a the Pearl.

Look and Feel
I must mention that I hated all the BlackBerrys in the past. I hated the fact that they were so expensive (in India, at least), and they didn’t provide the features that phones half that cost did provide. I hated the unergonomic keyboard arrangement, the monophonic ringtones, and the width of the devices. When I saw the Pearl, all of that was whisked away. The Pearl is beautiful.

The Pearl is not as wide as earlier BlackBerrys, making it look a bit more like a conventional mobile phone. It’s quite slim and compact, considering it’s a full featured Smartphone in there. The glossy black body coupled with the chrome trims on the side almost make it lustworthy. It was the first time I used the words "I like" and "BlackBerry" in the same sentence. And all this was before I even turned it on.

The display on the Pearl is a 2.5-inch, 65k color TFT LCD. The resolution is 240x260, which is the one used in the last 7100 series. The 8700s use a larger QVGA display, but 240x260 works for the small device that the Pearl is. The display is pretty bright and readable in sunlight as well. It also comes with a light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the device based on ambient lighting conditions.

I like the track ball, with some software installation you can make this track ball change colors. You can charge phone using regular USB and power adapter.

can somebody tell me what is the media centre on this device all about. what can it do and what is the quality like. can it be used as an mp3 player or any thing as such as this. i have been enquireing about this mobile for the past few days an no mobile store seems to know about it :) strange might you think. to be honest i want honest answears before i have to settle for the more common nokia that every person in the world has. i simply want somehting edge'y i.e. the blackberry pearl. and i would use it for a more media purpose. i realy like this kit but just affraid to purchase it without any knowledge of it. thanks

There is some issue with the reviewer.
He has provided some wrong information. I don't really know if he ever used blackberry pearl or not!
I have this phone and I know what feature it has and what not!
For your kind information Aalap, it can be recharged via standard USB, if you have blackberry driver installed! Camera quality is pretty good considering it is 1.3 Mega pixel. The default UI might be unimpressive because it is a default one. Please change the theme and you have what you want.
Have you tried playing any video? It has amazing display.
It comes loaded with so many features that I needed to go through 30minutes interactive tutorial, which comes with the phone.
You can have micro SD card upto 2GB. What more do you need?
Email, browsing, multimedia, smartphone all together!!

I am not into using mobile phones for emailing or surfing the internet, however, i do use the multimedia features of mobile phones to their fullest. I want a mobile which is different an uncommon amongst the public, most importantly it should look sleek and have a stylish user interface, is the pearl the right option (price is not an issue) or is there any other cell phone which fits my need? Please suggest a mobile phone for me.

Yoo-hoo!

i was so happy when i got the news. I call myself a huge blackberry addict. I use my 8700g for just about everything. While i was waiting for a good phone with camera features to be launched and was zeroing in on the hp 6965, i am happy that the pearl is launched so soon. The fact that india is the first country in the asia to get the pearl makes it a matter of pride for me.

i have already booked my order with airtel and will get it in two days. I agree that the camera is not as good as a nokia n93 but it is very well integrated. You can attach images to an e-mail making mobile blogging a piece of cake.

and yes, if your blackberry is on the bes your it admin can disable your camera at specified times thereby allowing you to maintain data security.

thanks for putting out the news.
