HTC Touch HD

3.5mm earphone socket, mini USB slot
FM radio and TouchFLO audio player is good
TouchFLO on the large display is helpful
Video playback is bad
Camera is sluggish
Accelerometer doesn't rotate all screens
No GPS software provided
Gets very hot after charging and on long calls
No memory card provided

HTC’s Touch HD has taken mobile display to the next level. For the vidiots like me a display this large sporting the kind of resolution it does is a godsend. I have to admit I was anxiously awaiting its arrival to the Indian market place and was proactively trying to get a handset to test even before it got here. Though that didn’t work out and disappointment was an understatement, I got it! The big question I was asking when I un-boxed it was - does it manage to deliver on all fronts and actually make the high price tag of Rs. 43, 000 seem like money worth spending? That’s what I’m here to help you decide.

Form Factor
The only word that comes to mind is ‘Sexy’. The slim black design that houses this ‘powerhouse’ of features is all snugly fit into a 115 x 62.8 x 12 mm dimension casing. The large 3.8-inch TFT LCD touchscreen display sports a 480 x 800 pixel, 65K color resolution which is the highest to be found on a mobile handset on the market. This is also the first truly totally touchscreen mobile there is with touch sensitive controls for answering and ending calls and also returning to the Home page.

It’s a very simple and yet stylish design. The only external controls that are actual physical buttons are the volume controls on the side and the power/screen off button on the top. The HD also has a standard 3.5mm earphone socket on the top. The bundled handsfree is all you’ll need though, but it’s good to have the open option. The 5MP camera is located at the rear of course with a secondary camera placed above the display. The two disappointments in design are – No flash for the camera and the rear panel HAS to be opened for a memory card to be accessed. An odd shaped USB 2.0 port is located at the bottom, but it still manages to easily accommodate a standard miniUSB connector.

The drawback of having a screen this large is of course the space it takes up in your pocket as the handset, slim as it is, is still a bit big and weighty at 146g. But that’s expected of course, so we’ll just have to live with it. Like some of the other HTC handsets the HD tends to get unusually hot after charging and while on long calls. The HD also tends to get a little warm when applications that you may be unaware of are running in the background. It was on more than one occasion that I was quite worried why my thigh was freakishly warm on a cold night.

Features and Performance
While I was mesmerized by the large display, let me just begin by saying that what comes after this note is quite depressing, but I’d just like to add that I’m willing to concede that some of the issues could be singularly with this particular test handset I received, then again, like I always say, why would they give a reviewer a handset that’s not running at it’s optimum capacity? Forward at your own risk.

Interface
If you’ve used or seen the HTC Touch Diamond with its TouchFlo 3D interface, the HD has nothing different to offer except a better laid out view considering the display. I do like the TouchFLO interface as it gives quick and easy access to all relevant functions and features with simple finger control. It can also be customized to user requirements which is perfect. The down side is that the sensitivity couldn’t be adjusted and that could sometimes be a bit of an issue. Other than that the regular Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS and UI remain very standard.

What really ticked me off was the fact that the accelerometer is absolutely useless for screen rotation when it comes to any of the screens expect the browsers. I had to install a third party application to rotate the display. The QWERTY keyboard could not be used in landscape mode when trying to send messages or emails. While the handset offers multiple options for data entry including a regular WinMob QWERTY keyboard, Transcriber, Block and Letter recognizer, alphanumeric and half QWERTY, the large screen is not always very effective. Except for the Half QWERTY and alphanumeric keypad the others will take some getting used to more so than these.

First of all Samir, get your facts straight...
The handset I received DID NOT come with any card.
NO I wasn't charging it on a hot plate thus it's VERY relevant to users (not you of course) that the handset gets so hot while charging in normal circumstances.
This is also a review on a particular product and NOT an experiment, so we're not going to test things like porting UIs.
Shayne @ Feb 27, 2009
first of all Mr Rana get a lifre ... Have you vere used a WinMo phone ever.
First of all it comes with a 8gb Memory card
LOL gets hot after charging.. what were you charging it on a Hot Plate
Win MO is the mots open mobile OS ever created.. Have you guys at Tech2 ever heard of a ROM upgrade or getting the Xperia Panels to run on the HD.. I am sure you have not cause all you guy s do is start up the phone compare it some other phone and write the review... Guys for a real review of the phone pls go to GSMarena, MobileBurn or Mobile-Review.. Tech2 sucks

I liked the part 'It was on more than one occasion that I was quite worried why my thigh was freakishly warm on a cold night'.
That apart nothing impressive neither about this write up nor as usual about the HTC brand!
Max @ Feb 04, 2009
htc is not living upto the reputation and besides once you use the phone you will know it sucks
daman @ Feb 03, 2009
Hi Sheyna in your review of almost all touch sreen phones you have two things in common rating all 3 and pricing all high
be it sony x1, samsung omnia, htc touch hd which phone is better and durable.
sunny @ Jan 30, 2009
I do not trust HTC any more. I have used the SP-5, the Touch, and now have a Touch Diamond, and as per HTC India's website which (then) showed the model to be with 3.5G plus secondary camera. When pointed out to them they quickly changed the website details, and forgot all about it. I had many talks with them, demanding features that were promised, but no avail. HTC India Customer Care is a joke. HTC international stopped responding to emails.

The sad part is after this experience I would not want to buy an HTC phone, but I do not have much choice because I would want to have a Windows Mobile device.

Neeraj @ Jan 28, 2009
It's seems interesting but i would say NOKIA is indeed the best one in the market and most reliable handset.
Navdeep @ Jan 28, 2009
Hi Shayne, Thanks for the reply...
Shreyas @ Jan 28, 2009
Can any body let me know what are the models available in HTC with in built GPS? I wanna go for GPS supported mobile.
Aditya @ Jan 28, 2009
I regret the day I purchased the HTC Touch. These guys are basically rip-offs and their 'customer service' is a joke. They'll forget you once they get their money.

Basically HTC touch is very slow. Pain in the butt for daily operations. VERY EXPENSIVE accessories. Can you imagine asking for 1500/- for a mediocre set of headphones? NO Upgrades. Even making a basic call is a head ache.

Dont buy HTC!
Aravind @ Jan 28, 2009
I bought HTC viva just before the release of Nokia 5800.But i dont regret my decision as my phone has done pretty well .
The differences i found between Viva and 5800 were 5800 has 3g ,3.2 mp cam,and the display rotates as per required.
But even HTC has its advantages 5800 does not has a smooth flow UI u need to use the scroll bar.But HTC has a smooth ,u just need to drag ur finger on the screen which will move the list up or down. And windows 6.1 is pretty stable and there are plenty of free apps for this OS compared to symbian in nokia which is specific to 5800.And finally u get Viva for just 16000
Harsha @ Jan 28, 2009
if the product justifies a premium price, still it is fine...but whats the use of 5 MP cam without a flash...premium pricing but no GPS software...HTC just cant put one HD feature and make it super premium product..
Gaurav @ Jan 28, 2009
I am not going to buy a HTC again in my life...The service is pathetic...e-mails, phone calls..nothing works with these guys.
martini @ Jan 28, 2009
Product might look good , But the company is pathetic in providing Service , I have given the handset for Service but the recived back in canniblised state , and to my surprise the the support person behaved very rudely with me ...I dont suggest any one to purchase the Handset from HTC
Anil @ Jan 28, 2009
@ Chandan, go with Nokia 5800, plus point over viva is its got 3g and 3mpx + better music quality rest is all same and of course the brand tag Nokia at 20,000 while viva is 16000
Chintan @ Jan 28, 2009
@Anusha @Amar, this is India and we are not allowed to enjoy luxury! :P 43K is a big JOKE!!!! not JOKE Probably a bad PJ !!!!!

chandan @ Jan 28, 2009
Hi Shreyas,

Sadly I have to wait for the company to send me the review piece. All I ask is to be a little more patient with us, I'm quite anxious to review the handset myself specifically for the keypad.
Shayne @ Jan 28, 2009
& Shayne, The HTC Touch Pro preview was done more than a month back but the review is pending, Please complete the review soon...
Shreyas @ Jan 27, 2009
Its a waste of money, I went to check it out in stores & by the price I am shocked.
Shreyas @ Jan 27, 2009
Everyone wants to beat Apple by mile but with fake products like this. Only thing good about this product is big screen and catchy look. Is that all for a 43K Phone. Now, I am beginning to feel iPhone damn cheaper!
Amar @ Jan 27, 2009
HTC has turned me off so hardly now...How could they giv some phone widout an additional memory card..no GPS software fo Rs.42,990?? M shocked! Those guys hav lost there minds, I guess!
