They never fail to surprise me, this company. Their phones are techno marvels when it comes to design and innovation. The Motorola MOTOMING A1200 is certainly no exception – it is a full-featured business smartphone, but it looks stylish enough to appeal to a ramp model. Why it called the Ming? Well, in Mandarin, it’s supposed to mean clear and bright. Let’s find out how true that is.

Design
Motorola loves their clamshells. They’ve got a trademark on using the term “flip phone,” after all. But the MING has taken it to a new level. The flip is actually a transparent hard plastic cover for the large touch-sensitive screen. But it’s not just a cover – it also holds the earpiece of the phone! What makes it look really astounding is the fact the speaker appears like it’s not connected to the phone at all, but if you look closely, you'll see 2 really thin wires run along the edges and down to the speaker. Adds a bit to the design as well. The transparent casing also has a magnifying effect, but don’t really try to use it for that.

On the inside you’ll find a truly vivid, bright and crystal clear 2.4" touch screen display sporting 262K colors with a resolution of 320x240 pixels. I guess this is where the Ming gets its name from! Just below the screen you’ll find a tiny 5 way joystick between two keys for taking and ending calls.

On the rear there’s the 2.0 megapixel camera and the slot to store the stylus. It’s a bit tricky figuring out where your SIM or SD card should go. The design is so flawless that it makes you think the entire phone is sealed, when all you need do is lightly slide the back panel down, et voila.

On the right side you’ll see the camera and voice command keys and at the bottom is the mini USB slot. On the left are the volume keys and in between them is another selection key that can be used when the flap is closed. At the bottom is the 2.5mm socket for the handsfree or earphones.

I’m not the biggest fan of the stylus operated devices, but the MING is quite comfortable to hold and to use. The whole device may appear to be a bit bulky from the way it looks in the pictures and also the heavy specs, and even though it is a bit on the heavier side at 122gm, it’s quite compact at 95.7 x 51.7 x 21.5.

the battery problem seems to be with all the motorola phones, my first phone was a moto t720 and its battery is a real problem. And unlike nokia, u can't even get motorola's batteries easily, some moto shops i enquired didn't even know about the phone!
Shashank @ Dec 15, 2007
i am using ming since jan 2007, and i think its a great phone, apart from 2 things,
1. battary sucks, no way it will last more then a day.
2. loud speaker sound is very low.
but then for sound thereare many software which can make it sound really great. 1 st phone i have used for more then 5 months.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone parts for the Motorola Ming A1200. I am looking for the wire harness that runs from the main board to the flip. If you know of anyone who would have one of these could you please let me know.
Thanks,
James

well, i recently prchased this phone, though i found it good,i am getting a strange problem, that it is nable to send mulitple messages 90% of the time.when i approached moto service cetre, they said its problem with the sim(i am using airtel),so i got a new sim,bt same problem again. Finally, they gave me a new piece in return...BUT that phone also gave same problem. Now i am waiting a permanent solution from motorola.

I recently bought a Motoming 1200. I found that battery drains of real fast. Intially it drains off in less than 12 hours. After several full charging, I got replaced the battery. But again the battery drains in 24 hours time (with very moderate use). Do any one seen this problem ? I dont have any apps running.
Also, the time on the phone gets corrupted. And it will start showing incorrect time. It shows fine if I turn it off and power up again.. any comments ??

Bappa das @ Apr 24, 2007
i am using it nearly 6 months., a stylish set. good battery, problem in synchronising with the pc., also blue tooth compatibility is a problem.
but it acts as a flash drive when connected to pc thro data cable., hence above problems are of least significance.

hi when r u reviewing the motorokr E6 so that i can decide which one to buy as both look quite similar..
bikas @ Apr 12, 2007
i think motorokr E6 has to be reviewed...it's better than ming
amol @ Apr 11, 2007
I also feel TECH2 should review ROKR E6 asap as due to its launch prices of MING were slashed to 14k, if no gr8 USP is there for E6 we can go for Ming.
cheers
Sameer @ Apr 11, 2007
It will b better if Tech2 ppl bring the review of motorokr E6 with this in context.... I feel both d phone r same..
