Nokia E71
By: Shayne Rana   |   Jul 31, 2008
  • 4.5
Good build quality
GPS works great
All media works without a hitch
Tweaked interface is a bonus
Plenty of business functionality
Camera quality is bad

Access to product upgrades are one of the perks of being in the tech industry. If you've come across a great product, you can't wait to see what the company’s going to come up with next. For instance, Nokia's E61 and then the E62 made Symbian a force to reckon with in the business world, and the upgraded and slimmer E61i with a 2MP camera took it a step further. And now the E71 is here. This time Nokia's gone beyond a step – it's a big leap, in fact.

Form Factor
The design is superb. The E71 seems to be a culmination of elegance, style, and class, with functionality kept utmost in mind. I think its steel shell gives it a macho look and feel. The display may be a little smaller than the E61i at 2.36 inches, but on the whole the E71’s specs are way better. The QWERTY keypad looks rather compressed, however, and will take a bit of getting used to. But the five-way nav-pad and relevant shortcut keys are located for easy accessibility. The prominent bottom portion of the handset kind of reminded me of Jay Leno’s chin.

The E71 is just 10mm thin and weighs 127g. This might seem a bit heavy, but it actually works in the handset's favor. The weight makes it feel solid and secure in your palm, and also imparts a sense of balance. The microSD card slot and USB port are located on one side, just beneath the infrared lens. On the other side you’ll find the volume/zoom keys and a dedicated key for the voice recorder. The 2.5mm earphone socket is located above these.

What surprised me the most is the lack of a dedicated camera key. Considering that the E71 has a 3.2MP autofocus camera (with LED flash) it's odd there’s no soft-touch key that allows you to focus, or so I thought. I realized – quite by chance, I must add – that you can autofocus using the the 'T' key located just under nav-pad, and then use the center key of the nav-pad to release the shutter and capture the image. It’s ridiculous... you won't know any of this till you actually read the manual – and how many of us bother to do that?

BABBAL @ Dec 16, 2009
The comment about the auto focus "T" button and the centre key is definitely ridiculous. I think however smart one may be its always proper to go thro the manual before operating any instrument or electronic items. A small machine with so many features cannot be self educative.

I am one of the first adopters of E71. There are seious issues in software and in a combination of few key clicks to access the address book the device hangs and does a soft reboot. While it takes a few seconds to recover, unless the phone is switched off and rebooted it refuses to be fully functional. It is about time Nokia should do something about this unless there are announcements of upgrades which I am not aware of.
The form factor is good but there are serious issues while someone tries taking out the SIM as it is placed in a way that extrication of the same becomes a project by itself.
Overall it is a hype and not a technical wizardry of sort.

NIMIT SHAH @ Nov 28, 2008
Nevermind the below, I should read more carefully :)
Niben @ Nov 25, 2008
You had trouble focusing with the camera! Did you use the "2" key to focus the shot first? Since there isn't a shutterbutton you first need to press "2" to autofocus, then press the D-pad to take the picture.

It took me alittle while to find that in the manual :)
Niben @ Nov 25, 2008
e71 doesn't support blackberry services at all. i would prefer blackberry or moto q9h . it lacks such an important business application. atleast vodafone doesn't provide blackberry services on e71
brijesh @ Nov 09, 2008
There is no 2nd camera (3g) in the indian version for face to face calling.

Nowhere do you describe the call quality or anything else for that matter. One of the main concerns with the e71 is the call quality and network strength.

Some people report it having problems, while others report its only in the e71-2 versions

Can someone compare features in terms of email usage, internet speed, multiple mail portal support, value for money, expansion memory card support, image quality, between Nokia e71 & RIM Bold.
Lovely @ Aug 14, 2008
does the Nokia E71 support blackberry services ?
rajen @ Aug 06, 2008
Well, I had never experience internet from gprs, people are using it from past 3-4 years atleast, but there is no improvement in the speed. Last week i purchased a nokia e71 which is advanced phone, i accessed internet from gprs via data cable connected to pc, speed was so slow , that i dont want to connect internet through gprs anymore. I hope with 3G coming some good data transfer speeds , we customers will get and at reasonable prices.
mayank @ Aug 05, 2008
Is it a symbian series60 v3 release or a UIQ release.
SHAKA @ Aug 05, 2008

Rakesh Venkatram @ Aug 03, 2008
well how about its service centers. Do they have the technical competence...I have read on other site about it & it says it is very bad..i want to go for this phone..but this is like black spots on the moon...
surajnaikin @ Aug 02, 2008
its to good , as your saying camera clarity as a problem, any sign of rectifying, and any chance of price to come down
madhu kumar np @ Aug 02, 2008
Its a great phone but u forgot to mention that this does not support blackberry connect, which i think is blunder made by nokia. YOU guys at tech2 should highlight these things.
Rahul Gupta @ Aug 01, 2008
Looks like a good phone. but no touch screen. screen would have been little bigger. thanks they have come up with competition to blackberry.
Vijay Kumar B S @ Aug 01, 2008
The detailed review is incomplete. I hope you are aware that there is no Blackberry connect in E71, Nokia have offered their own Email service that is still in Beta. This should have been highlighted in your review of a business phone unless you want the phone to play with. In that case there are many options in the market
Uday @ Aug 01, 2008
wats the price? Is it touch screen?
Shaheen @ Aug 01, 2008
Nokia maps in E71 have 3 months license after which you have to subscribe to it.. i.e pay extra.. unlike in Nokia 6110 navigator which has lifetime license..
Wrong move Nokia
A.H @ Aug 01, 2008
You call this a review, this is worst than a preview what general gadget blogs give, you had this phone in your hand for Like what -20 minutes... please guys keep some standards(don't know what constraints you guys have).. you have missed tons of features.. and specifications... don't underestimate your readers..
A2VP(bluetooth video streaming),using phonebook from homescreen, quality of qwerty keyboard....many more
Your review is coming after a month of the phone's launch.. you guys call yourself "TECH GURUS(prehistoric period)"... take this as +ve criticism and improve yourselves.. you are the only tech site of India...
Be Different, Be better..IMPROVE for sake of our country
A.H @ Aug 01, 2008
There is a business card reader under the multi scanner feature, which you have missed during your evaluation. I've been using this phone from day one of its release and its probably the best business phone ever available till date.
