Nokia N97 - Mobile Phone
By: Shayne Rana   |   Jun 22, 2009
  • 3.5
Well designed
Superb audio quality
Great battery life
Very responsive touchscreen
Camera could have had more features
Camera quality is average
Rear panel didn't sit properly

This review maybe a little late but I had to wait for Nokia to officially launch the N97. I like doing things by the book. But for this particular review, I decided to be a wee bit unconventional, so I'm writing it from the handset itself. These notes will be emailed to my editor from the phone.

Form Factor
Let me just get those off my chest - I was a little skeptical of the N97's 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen working out too well. For the record, it's brilliant. It's as responsive as any other touchscreen handset out there.

The simplistic singular button for accessing the menu is just that... Simple. The touch sensitive call keys, on the other hand are just a little too closely spaced. It took a little while to get used to but the UI compensates with onscreen options. The front camera and light sensor work without a hitch.
The slide out QWERTY keypad and screen angle are every bit as great as any ad or image you've come across. There are arch-sliders and then there's the N97. The keys are a bit small, but I'm quickly getting the hang of it. I found the on-screen alphanumeric keypad extremely handy as well for quick one handed typing with its large keys.

The N97 may not be a sleek handset and it is just a little bit on the hefty side, but its weight seems well adjusted for comfort and portability. It has a 3.5mm earphone socket built in and one on the handsfree as well. Didn't care too much for the bundled earphones. A micro USB is located on one side. It doubles as a charger port as well. A screen lock slider switch is right next to it. A set of volume/zoom keys and a camera button are on the other side.

The 5mp camera with a dual LED flash is at the rear behind a slide protector. My one main issue is the lack of a hot swap slot for the microSD card, then again with 32 Gigs of space, it's no big deal. The rear panel had a problem sitting back into the grooves. I didn't want to force it any more than i did. It stuck out a bit ominously though.

All relevant accessories are included with the packaging. All in all, the N97 is a trendy well designed handset. I like it so far. On to the next section.

Features and Performance -
UI

The Symbian OS version 9.4 with an S60 UI coupled with an ARM 11 434MHz processor makes for speedy usage and virtually no lag while multi-tasking. It's at least a couple of levels higher than the 5800's. There's a smooth flow to the system and a quickness that accompanies it when it comes to opening apps like the N-Series video browser section and files that I've normally had issues with. Touchscreen navigation is no problem either. Like i mentioned earlier it's quite responsive but not annoyingly so that it'll activate features if it grazes your pocket or any other surface.

The desktop can be customized to include all relevant short cuts to various options, settings and features. It's called 'Live Desktop' as you can stay connected to Facebook etc. all the time and access it from here. With a flick of your finger you can easily hide all of the options. In some ways though, the 5800's desktop is better. The History for contacts option is not available here in the N97 for some reason. That was rather helpful to keep track of in coming and outgoing contact with a specific person.

Media
The N97 is definitely equipped with one of the better music players in Nokia's multimedia range of handsets. The tones are clear and quite well balanced. The 8 band graphic EQ and presets with Stereo Widening only make things better and provide for a richer audio experience.

The lack of a Visual Radio application was quite a disappointment. I was expecting it to be part of the feature set as it showed up in the specs all over the place. It does have an FM Transmitter though. The FM radio with RDS was just ok and in no way anything to write home about.

Sadly, Nokia still didn't find it necessary to include a few relevant codecs like DivX and XviD for video playback. Having a great widescreen like this feels like a bit of a waste in this case. So you'll still have to get a hold of a decent converter to alter your videos for the N97 to MPEG4 and 3GP. The ability to Copy Paste videos would have made this handset so much more appealing.

Podcasting, a voice recorder and a quick link to YouTube are available. The games are not impressive so no big deal. A few editing options are also present for pictures taken via the camera. It all supports AV out but no cables have been included.

N97 is surely the best phone on earth today. No one matches its charisma and quality. The dream phone.

Manav Chawla @ Jul 04, 2009
still N97 is no competition for iphone 3G S.
iphone rocks.
iphone interface is just enough to kill any other touchscreen phone even N97.
plus the cost of N97 is pretty high.
The Game @ Jul 02, 2009
Some sort of exclusivity in apps would have done better justice to this brilliant device. All apps are generic and can easily be downloaded from the net.
Jason @ Jul 01, 2009
currently it costs 35000 in mumbai irla , nokia priority dealer , go and check this out . very nice mobile, and.....now nokia already announced its Firmware update. that means small bugs are fixed and phone is Superb. it will be realesed for public on 1st july....ok

jatin makkar @ Jun 26, 2009
Yesterday I saw a dummy of the phone and didnt feel good; The tilting screen was not good. Its kind of an annoying. Hope to see the Touch Pro 2 releases soon and be a little cheaper or at the same margin. Time will tell
Shreyas @ Jun 25, 2009
Shayne,

I am not sure whether you are correct. Hotswap means, the ability to change the memory card without switching off the mobile phone. Removing just the battery cover, doesnt make the phone to switch off.
Niyaz @ Jun 24, 2009
Hardly any diff. between N96 and N97 prices. obiviously features are far better. Wait for sometime. It will sure reduce.can not go for it since i lost my N95 8 gb :(
Nokia should come up with inbuilt mobile tracker like samsung.
TOTO @ Jun 24, 2009
For the features and performance described any price tage in the range 22-25k looks ok to me. Even 26k does not deliver value for money. Fail to understand why nokia is a laggard when compared with LG and Samsung when it comes to things like camers, flash etc. LG is already out with 8mega pixel and with goof features in the camera.
Nagaraj @ Jun 24, 2009
i got the inner information that it's price is RS37000.believe me.
MRIDUL KUMAR @ Jun 23, 2009
it's a really good phone but it's price is Rs37000.WHICH IS VERY HIGH

Waiting for the HTC Touch Diamond 2 review! It simpy rocks \m/
Prateek @ Jun 23, 2009
QuickOffice is just a software. It shouldn't cloud your impressions of the phone. for .avi playback, you simply need the free DivxPlayer.
Aatif @ Jun 23, 2009
Hi I'm waiting for Nokia N97 since December 2008. After seeing its all features I think two problem is there one, limited office edition and second no mail application provided. BTW I think if its not provided now then nokia might release an update for that in near future. Else we can use third party applications instead of it. BTW phone is awesome but price is too high..
Dhaval @ Jun 23, 2009
Not value for money!
Even a single drop could damage the handset
Shaheen @ Jun 23, 2009
Just the way the Author had felt, I was looking forward to this mobile from the day it was announced to be released. However the mail application is a big a disappointment. With Nokia discontinuing with the Blackberry connect and the Mail for Exchange being not compatible with most corporate mail servers, I definitely miss the usage of mails. This should have had the full Office applications support to create, edit documents. I would expect these on a Phone at this price. Nokia should look into supporting Blackberry connect on its N and E series phones, otherwise it is bound to miss the business users.
Aravind @ Jun 23, 2009
The phone is good. But at the price of 35,000 it's more of waste
Kevin @ Jun 23, 2009
since its first announcement; i have waiting for this device and now i m also little disapointed . it has no xvid, no office docs editor but price is so high, however being nokialover and seeing that nokia was awarded indias most trusted brand i suggest people to opt for it. beacuse other n97's rivals htc, samsung, lg and orher are goody goody , after 2 /3 month they encounter much problems and being popular nokia devices get much third party apps but other dont support it. till now now i have read as much as 35/40 reviews of n97 and some review hated this but i love this device. cuz its nokia m..
SUVEDI @ Jun 23, 2009
@Sadali The Nokia N97 is not meant for licking, but you could give it a try...
Citizen_Of_India @ Jun 23, 2009
i lick nokia N97
sadali @ Jun 23, 2009
@ Shayne

You Rock \m/
Prateek @ Jun 23, 2009
Niyaz,
Hot swap means having an external port for the card i.e. not one under the battery OR under the rear panel.
HTC Touch Diamond 2 review will be up on Friday guys.
Thanks for the feedback, keep 'em coming.

The processor could have been better.
I mean, they could have put a processor like the 600 mhz of E72.
Nokia fails yet again to give a COMPLETE device....:-(
Abhishek Patel @ Jun 22, 2009
Dear Author,

N97 memory cards are hot swappable. You were having the mobile in your hands and typing the review from it, but I dont know what made you 'guess' them wrong.
Niyaz @ Jun 22, 2009
regarding the DivX/XviD playback.. even my N81 plays avi, mp4 etc direct copy and paste using Core Player... no conversion reqd ! And so would be the case for the N97 (provided there's a ver. for symbian 9.4)
Tarun Varshney @ Jun 22, 2009
Should i know the price of N97?
Deepak @ Jun 22, 2009
iphone 3 G S is having far more features than this N97
Prashanth @ Jun 22, 2009
Apart from Live Desktop Feature, slightly wider screen and 5 Mpix Camera there is not much that Nokia N97 has different to offer from Nokia 5800
Bhautik Joshi @ Jun 22, 2009
iPhone is still miles ahead... Y opt 4 a hard keyboard when soft keyboard is more than comfortable.
Iphone 3g s will b launched in India in august 4 around 30k and iphone3g would b available 4 22-25k then..
It would b a waste of money 2 buy n97 4 35k.
Divij @ Jun 22, 2009
How is n97 compared to 5800 ?
Varun @ Jun 22, 2009
Which is the best?

HTC Touch Diamond 2, Nokia N97 or Apple iPhone 3G?

Also, what will be the price of Apple iPhone 3G S??
Prateek @ Jun 22, 2009
iPhone Still Rocks!! No competetion yet :)
TTerminal @ Jun 22, 2009
please do a review of HTC Touch Diamond2
George @ Jun 22, 2009
To be honest Shreyas, neither did I.
Shayne @ Jun 22, 2009
