Samsung i900 Omnia

Camera is good and feature-rich
Reads popular video formats such as DivX and XviD
Plenty of storage space
Feature-rich with relevant apps
Audio player has low output
Custom keypad is much too large
Display is not too clear in sunlight
Battery life is poor with GPRS enabled
Handset gets hot with use

In the preview I gave you my first impressions about the Samsung i900 Omnia. Now it's time for a detailed review, so I'll be doing some relevant in-depth analysis of the handset and its functions as best as I can. Let's get to it.

Form Factor
There's nothing to dislike about the design, especially the superb 3.2 inch display with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels. Samsung is still using its proprietary slot for USB/Charger and handsfree connectivity, but the Omnia comes with a mic adapter that has a volume control and a 3.5mm jack.

For those of you who caught the unboxing video, I mentioned I liked Samsung's earphone design; but unfortunately these are nothing like the previous models that I tested with their PMPs. The earpieces do come in different sizes, but they're a little stiff and tend to hurt your inner ear.

Though the i900 is a slim handset, Samsung couldn't find the space to fit a slim stylus, so you'll end up toting an over-sized one that looks like an eyeliner. Great for the ladies; not the guys. It can be hung at the side but it gets in the way. The lack of a hot-swap slot for the microSD card could be a drawback if it weren’t for the 8GB or 16GB onboard storage and the 16GB card included with the box.

The optical mouse sensor located under the screen is the perfect solution to the cumbersome stylus. The sensitivity can be controlled and you can also opt for switching the pointer off using the surface as a five way nav-pad. Yes, it's also got a button.

I wonder what the Xperia's optical mouse navigation would be like. More on that later, when I can pit these handsets against each other. So stay tuned for another Gadget Wars feature soon!

ranaji @ Feb 06, 2009
I have a Samsung Omnia and am unable to sync it to my PC. Samsung Support is very unhelpful in this matter, I took it to the Service Centre & the engineers there still can't figure out the problem. So be careful if U want to buy the OMNIA
Savio @ Feb 04, 2009
There is nothing called a perfect phone. Also, Indian reviews of any tech product is very different from international reviews.
Rob @ Feb 03, 2009
I cannot sync my OMNIA with my PC, I get the error message: USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED. on the PC. I e-mailed Samsung thrice but have received no response. Can anybody help me. Active sync is loaded from the Supplied CD.

I love this phone.. The only thing I don't like about this phone is that it doesn't have the QWERTY keyboard.. that kind of upset me.. but otherwise this phone is phenomenal!

Oh and people are keep on saying that its too overpriced... then think again.. because would you rather spend 500 on a phone thats crap and everybody can use? or would u spend 500 on a smart phone and feel good about it?

Get real.. so what if the economy is bad? People still want to live in their own high class society sort of thing hmm? My point exactly!

But its an awesome phone, I don't regret buying it for a second.

navjot singh @ Oct 15, 2008
The phone though being very good looking is still not the one you can call 'Perfect' because of the price tag...........Let's wait and see how does Nokia 5800 express comes up....
Nikhil Chopra @ Oct 14, 2008
Hari,

Since i tested it and have images of it in action, and since you said every reviewer (so I'm presuming plural), from other sites have stated the same, I'm not sure what kind of absolution you're looking for. The Omnia has an Internal GPS module and has the SUPPORT for using an external device as well.
Trust me, we wouldn't lie, not all of us.
Shayne @ Oct 14, 2008
Samsung Omnia does NOT have a built-in GPS. You have to buy a separate external GPS unit and connect it to the Omnia. Samsung has not yet published the list of compatible GPS units. There could be compatible issues, connectivity issues, and software issues.
The Page 43 of the user manual clearly says you have to connect an external GPS receiver.
It is not clear how every reviewer claims that this one has built in GPS receiver. Even CellGuru on the NDTV said that there is built in GPS.
Let Samsung tell us which GPS engine or chip is built into the Omnia.
The unit is not worth half its price!
Hari @ Oct 14, 2008

ranjit khakre @ Oct 10, 2008
This phone was much hyped by the samsung but at the price of 40k nobody will buy it.
Prices are expected to come down soon.
Jaikumar @ Oct 10, 2008
Try the HTC Touch Pro. It has the world built in it !
Slightly bulky put it packs in a puch with it super processor.
Screen resolution ... the best in every class .. beats the iphone anyday. Tonnes of free software availble on the net for it and so one does not have to buy applications.
These are OE for palm, o2 and so on ..
One needs to get use to it after that its all u ever wanted in a phone.
Its a phone for tech savvy people only ... Others pls refrain ! and stick to the low class segment
Pk70 @ Oct 09, 2008
Its a good phone but its priced wa too high...cmon 40000 bucks...would rather buy a laptop than a cellphone..Its a very good phone, feature rich but damn 40000...:(...i DONOT think just because of taxes, the cell prices are high...varun got it spot on....
Ronnie @ Oct 09, 2008
The phone is overpriced, considering that Nokia 5800 is going to be available for less than 20k. The only diff is this phone has a higher resolution camera and more storage, but all of that should not cost more than 7-8k, so it's still overpriced by 10k.
Nokia has shown that we can get everything without having to pay a fortune for it.

Oh, for those of you who are worried about taxes, tax on mobile phones is just 4%. So the tax component in this phone is just around Rs1500.
Varun @ Oct 09, 2008
You want a gadget to perform everything and still u expect it to cost what........10-20k....c'mon, it beats the i-phone black and blue, the price difference is not that huge....furthermore it's the launch price....so will definately come down.
NB @ Oct 09, 2008
the import taxes and all those taxes . raping out pockets in open. something must changing.
Anshuman @ Oct 09, 2008
