Camera is good
interface is clear
Speakerphone is good
Touch screen must be used with the stylus
A little sluggish interface
Theme is boring
Earphones are bad

Business phones are in a class by themselves but there’s no way that even the best business phones of today aren’t equipped with multimedia features of some sort. Their appeal, as business class models however, also greatly depend on their appearance and not just the business functions they can perform. The ergonomics of the phone itself are a vital reason for people to choose the device. The P1i for some strange reason is said to be the upgrade to the P990. In reality it neither looks nor feels anything like it but is a design and functioning copy of the M600.

Form Factor
Like I said it looks identical to the M600. The P1i has a 2.6 inch, TFT touchscreen display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and 256k colors. There’s a secondary VGA camera near the earpiece for video calls. Underneath the screen is a bit of an awkward QWERTY keypad. Why awkward? Because it has 2 alphabets on each key. Each key has a concave design to it so you can distinguish the alphabets. It may be tricky to start off with if you’re not a old M600 user. But trust me, you will get the hang of it. On the right side of the P1i is the dedicated internet key at the top; followed by the M2 card slot underneath and at the bottom is the dedicated camera key. On the other side is a steel loop for the strap, followed by the scroll wheel and return key.

The Power key and Infrared sensor can be found at the top of the phone and the stylus is conveniently positioned on the left corner near the power key. The bottom is where you’ll find that darn Sony Ericsson proprietary slot for the earphones, USB and charger. What I do like about the P1i is that it’s quite light at 124g and is really easy to handle. With or without the touchscreen. The rear is where you’ll find the 3.2 megapixel camera with a flash. It’s just below a silver bar, where it would seem the speakers are located.

What I do need to mention is that the material the screen is made of, is a little too soft. My recommendation is that you don’t use anything else that includes your nails ladies, to maneuver through the menus on the touchscreen. If you don’t get used to using the stylus, you can severely scratch the screen. The P1i also comes a universal stand that will allow you to prop it up and has 3 separate slots for the charger and USB (rear) as well as a separate port on the side for the headphones.

It's a fantastic phone considering the price.... good value for money. Good camera with flash, browser, media player, screen. The phone never hangs!! Easy to get used to as well.

Two minor problems: 1. the alarm doesnt work when the phone is switched off - this can be countered by reducing the ringtone and text message tone volume to zero (not muting the phone though). The alarm will work that way!!

The other problem is that there is no call recorder.... live with it.... coz the phone is REALLY worth it!!

Good luck....

A die hard SE FAN!!

has anyone used the Navigation feature on the P1i- how is it? I've heard that you need to attach a device or something. Also is it voice enabled and whats the cost of using the navigation on it?

I bought this phone a month ago and found its a cool phone , 3.2 MP camera, FM radio, Mp3 Player , Blackberry services & its organiser makes it more useful to the people on the move .
Though making playlist is bit tricky but once you have done it its cool.

It worth buying at such a low price . Sony is much much better than Nokia .

The same fetured model in Nokia is 34 k & sony provides at 17K.

All Sony loyalists must buy this & have fun & joy.

CHEERS ! DK

Those who need to import xls file can have other way round . Import xls file in Outlook express/outlook and then synchronise with P1i . It works so No need to worry how to get back old contact details of old phone.

I had bought this P1i just 2 days back. I found this is really cool phone , having all features. Its really worth buying it.
This phone is not having any problem of slow/hang. Only one feature missing is voice recoding when call is active. This was there in all othe version of sony but some how not finding in P1i. It is having sound recorder but can not use as voice call recorder. Overall very good phone as compare to all other brand. I have sold my Nokia 6270 but Sony is better then Nokia.

Those who need to import xls file can have other way round . Import xls file in Outlook express/outlook and then synchronise with P1i . It works so need to worry how to get back old contact details of old phone.

Guys go for P1i you will , its really worth it.

I bought this phone 4 weeks before. Was working fine when i got it , from the first day i usually restarts saying your phone has been restarted for improving performance, and after two weeks it had its display blank. I took it to Sony erricoson service, they changed almost everything in phone starting from LCD to motherboard, and it took 10 days for the same. For a two week old phone and repair of 10 days, there is no better way to waste your money and efforts buying this phone . Believe me Sony erricson has pathetic service , they dont respond to calls nor replies to email. The products are victim of pathetic quality checks, I heard if you buy outside india, you get the product made in Sweden rather than one you get it from India.

It is a month since i bought this smartphone. Definitely a decently packaged product, if you consider the size, weight etc. Performs well, except that it hang's sometimes (I suggest we shut it down, once a week). Battery life scared me initially, but is now performing well, after a fortnight of daily-charges. You can get it at 22.5 at Subhiksha (though I did not take it from there, since there is no support for data transfer). 23k from 'Phoneshop' Mumbai. Use a 'scratch-guard' to avoid scratches, as experienced by some. If anyone knows how to import the contact list into MS Excel, pls let me know. I am unable to view the contact list, on my PC.

nAno @ Sep 27, 2007
just bought the phone last Saturday... the qwerty keys are a bit awkward at first but im getting used to it. its got wifi so who needs 3g. :D its a great phone all in all. i cant compare it to any other brand because p1i has its own strengths and weakness like any other brand. so good luck to p1i users!
Potang_Ina_mo @ Sep 10, 2007
i've used the p1 and a lot of symbian phones b4 it.....(all nokia tho).
i found the UI of the p1 quite responsive and not sluggish at all.....all the nokia symbians i've used (inc. the N series) are horribly slow in comparison....
Hitesh @ Sep 09, 2007
I am using the p990i, which i had bought only a month before the P1i was launched, so i should be buying this little gem some time next year. Just before the P990i, i had a nokia n series phone and i feel Sony Ericsson makes far superior phones, Besides the Ton load of useful features, SE phones are high on build quality and far more user friendly. I would buy SE phones all my life....Thank You SE.
Deepak @ Sep 08, 2007
Its more like a Modern Calculator... the Keypad is real hard... And for sure the touch screen is not scratch proof.
Sandy Depp @ Sep 07, 2007
I have been using p1i for over a month now and my experience is amazingly good. Leaving the edge feature it has all the ammunition and features to kill the competition.
Having used p800, and p990 in the past i feel SE should have given the 5 way scroll button on p1i.rest everything about this phone is wonderful and believe me u just cant compare it with n95 or even e90 as both of them are not pda and do not offer touch screen interface.. so go ahead and enjoy.. cheers

there is a prob in the phone when i recvd the sms dut the time is not correct & this prob is in all p1i
aziz @ Sep 05, 2007
I bought this phone a month ago when it was launched for 23k and beleive me it's a deal! You get 1GB MM card free alongwith a coupon worth that lets you buy software from the Sony site worth almost 5K. It is an excellent business phone at this price and the slugishness can be pardoned for the number of features that this phone has. I have not had 1 occassion to feel that a feature I need was missing in this gem. The form factor too is wonderful and allows operation by 1 hand of almost all features with your fingers including the touchscreen! Got for it - it's a killer!
Shinit @ Sep 05, 2007
