HTC Touch

Windows mobile 6 does have something new
Looks good
Slow Interface
TouchFLO not very responsive
Messaging a problem
NO flash on camera

With the planned rumors and later on with the official hype (iPhone does seem to have set a new standard for hypes surrounding a product) that buzzed around, industry analysts did set their eyes on the launch of the HTC Touch. We did too and although there is lot to the Touch, there seems to be little to give HTC credit for. You will love the new Windows Mobile 6, but will hate the machine its on. Read on.

Design
We had only seen it on the internet, and the Touch looked so avant-garde and like everything you ever wanted with its ultramodern form factor, that we had to call it in sooner or later. This goes without saying that you are more likely to gasp a loud ‘wow’ when you undo the packaging than when you actually get down to using it.

The Touch comes very light and compact in a Black rubber finish throughout. A handful of buttons are so placed as to simply deck the phone with tiny light green and red lights. There’s also the five-way D-pad made of a thin squared line of steel. And of course, you have the screen leveling the front to give the Touch its candy bar look. The phone measures 99.9 x 58 x 13.9 mm and weighs 112g.

We have learnt from past experience that no product comes without its own set of follies. This one too, if you depart from the scrutiny of a casual onlooker, features a major design flaw, which otherwise could have meant nothing but outright innovation — the Hot Swap Slots. I have mentioned earlier the brilliance in the idea of building a phone with hot swappable ‘everythings’, right from the memory card to the SIM card. The Touch does just that. The hot swap slots are housed on the left side, but you will require long nails or sharp objects to dislodge the cover. In fact, with the piece that we had, I hated accessing any of the cards.

It is 1.5 years since i am using the htc touch. The touch screen is very sensitive .Pls keep away from sweat which will damage the touch screen. When i purchased the phone in 3 months my touch screen did not work, since i got the mobile with warranty i got the touch screen replaced free of charge due to manufacturing defect, and they had upgraded me with the new windows 6.1 version software which is very fast compared to the older version.Guys try the new version and you will appreciate the performance of this small beauty.

I Have been using my phone for about a year now and i am already on my third one... the first one's charging port stopped working and then my last one the screen went screwy on me( half of it was black and half mulicoloured) I have yet to have problems wtth my new one except i have noticed extreme diffuculty "touching" some items on the screen..... If i touch right on top of something it doesn't work, you have to touch like underneath the item.... anyone else find this happening to them??
Jackiy @ Aug 28, 2009
i have been using this phone for since nov 07. it hangs when i press on file explore and have problem with blue tooth also . the latest problem is with the touch screen it is not responding properly and part of the screen came off on one corner where the close button which i is annoying. some times the mini usb port is loose and have difficulty in charging.
venkat @ Jul 13, 2009
I switched over to this phone from SE P1i (which had problems hence) and I regret every thing about it. The phone sucks. DO not even go near it,. Nothing seems to be right about it. With the keypad locked the phone volume can be made silent!!! Beat that. Worst is the volume button is on the side so all of you (including me) who carry the phone on the belt strap get ready for trouble. Yes it syncs with Outlook etc. but all in all a terrible phone. I miss my P1i so much.
Manish Kamdar @ Jul 02, 2009
Its is a pocket pc phone and is very useful. one serious problem is that in summer the sweat from your ear gets on torhe touch screen and spoils it..
Yesuthasen @ Jun 19, 2009
check out
freewarepocketpc.net
you'll get all the softwares, games, addons etc for windows mobile devices all legally free. Usually good freeware apps are also listed in good tech magazines like Digit, Chip.

i want to know about the demerits of this phone including the battery life
ashish @ Apr 22, 2009
i had it for a year -- loved the sleekness and i put up with everything else. until it just died on me yesterday. "mother board problem, 75% of cost, out of warranty period, ma'am"
yukk. $400 for something that didnt last 14 months -- completely not worth it, unfortunately
ara @ Mar 16, 2009
Hi to all, I am using this phone for past 1 week... this is a very good phone. Only issue is its battery. The only option which works for me to disable the backlight (ie set it 0 ) in daytime... its improved the battery performance..

hello guys..
i saw the phone on internet and fell in love with it. i want to buy a new phone and i was looking for it. but there are some features which disappoint me. i read the reviews over here and watched the videos on youtube too.. frankly speaking i liked this phone a lot, so much so that i won't even consider it's demerits, but at times it does happen that i need to get my work done quicky so i can't rely on slower phones. can't risk performance for looks!! pls help.. thankin you all in advance!
yatin @ Aug 24, 2008

ANANTHRAM @ Aug 05, 2008
Hello, Recently go a new HTC touch, I liked almost all the feature except one or two like the camere and battery. Is there any utility by which i can increase the battery strength?? and for camera I don't think any one can help, its required a tripod to shoot a pic, image stabilisation is not at all there.

deepak solanki @ Jul 23, 2008
qureshi sahib has no idea what he's talking about.what an unprofessional comment. comes from a chap who hasn't used the fone- probably picked up his comments from cnet - irresponsible journalism.i hae used nokia communicator, iphone etc. i cant say i have seen a better fone than htc -am using it since 1 1/2 yrs. its just like using a laptop. i also own iphone and nokia comnictor- it beats both hollow in functionality. go for it. its cheap.but service in india is a issue.
manjeet singh @ Jul 13, 2008
I think the writer has written the review with some vengeance and all that he has to say about HTC Touch is negative. I am myself a user and all that the review says is false. The phone has no problems and is the best one I have had so far.
Amit @ May 24, 2008
I really would recommend that you learn how to use the transcriptor. Use technology before you review it. The keys on the screen are too small I agree. But when you can write, why type??
Rohit @ May 14, 2008

this pocket pc is great. just some tweaks and u r on. battery status, advanced config, happy tapping keyboard plugin, flash plugin, ample amount of 3d games. what else u need. and to correct u it has got 128MB ram and 256 MB rom. Works fine infact great.!!!!! dont misguide it also has a talk time/ game playing of around 4.5hrs+/ 6.5 hrs+. great innovation by htc.
CHAITANYA TIWARI @ Mar 08, 2008

balli @ Jan 24, 2008
to surf internet using the wi-fi do you need to have a data plan? or you just need a wi-fi/hot spot area and you're good to go !!

I purchased this phone about 3 months back... and now its difficult to get rid of it.... so many times in spite of signal it failed to dial and it behaves like as if signal is not there.... battery discharges everyday... i was very happy with nokia phones earlier... phone takes snap after 1 second of click... forget video...
Munish @ Oct 15, 2007

MR JOT SINGH @ Sep 20, 2007
This is a great phone but needs improvement
Samrat Mazumdar @ Sep 09, 2007
The most evident "BAD" which this review ignored is the absence of 3G and HSDPA.. This means it's not future proof... considering the fact that Airtel itself is looking into introducing 3G in the near future.
Faridur R Choudhury @ Sep 08, 2007
Its high time we chucked the windows software outa the window and took a bite out of an apple .. the i phone ! These windows based mobiles are a nightmare .. always hung up and always slowing down our lives.
Raja @ Sep 05, 2007
Also for messaging you can install the free HTC PhonePad which has big T9 buttons for easy messaging. Granted, it should have come pre-installed with the phone (Dunno why HTC didn't do that), but anyway you can just do it yourself and enjoy msging. There are also customation applications out to customize the TouchFLO cube completely so you can change the applications there and add your own.. Also there's an amazing contact manager for WM phones that works very well with the Touch, called PocketCM (pocketcm.com) and its FOR FREE! Amazing scrolling capabilities.. and there are lots and lots more tweaks and hacks around to make this phone badass, and it's not even that hard..
Siddharth @ Sep 04, 2007
Jeez man, you "techie" people should atleast know how to tweak WM phones to optimize them.. almost everyone uses the Touch overclocked to 260-286Mhz to solve the speed issues. It easily overclocks to 260 Mhz atleast (mine is stable at 286, and some even reached 312 Mhz). Also, there are custom ROM's out which take a few minutes to flash that give you 25 MB more storage and 4 MB more RAM which makes it even more fast.. Also, you missed 1 major part of this phone. The TouchFLO thingy can recognize the difference between the stylus and the thumb, so if you press somewhere with your thumb it kinda calculates the center of your press and accurately judges what you were clicking on. All the people bashing this sexy phone just dunno how to optimize it..
Siddharth @ Sep 04, 2007
I like its col our and its design. One thing i don't like thats is its camera.
Karnveer Singh @ Sep 04, 2007
What about battery life? I bought it one month ago.....would not have bought if I knew it had such short battery life :(
