Widescreen monitors once the choice of enthusiasts and power users, have dropped in prices rapidly, and are now finding favor with consumers. Looking to gain a foothold in this rapidly increasing market, Asus has released the MW221u with a response time lower than the competition and at gamers and professionals. How does this panel stack up to the competition? Read on...

The MW221u is one of the most solidly constructed monitors we have come across in the 22-inch range. Like the PW201, we reviewed earlier, the MW221u comes with a very solid metal base, a shiny piano-black bezel on the outer edge of the monitor and a thick plastic frame which runs around the edges of the LCD panel. Asus seems to have paid particular attention to this frame, as it appears to have been constructed out of a more sturdy plastic that is normally used for frames. The bottom edge of the monitor which houses the OSD buttons is enclosed in a thin metal frame adding to the air of solidness this monitor seems to have. Just beneath this metal frame, lies the speaker grill which is hidden away. We appreciate this touch, as other manufacturers often stick the speaker grill on the front side of the monitor and more often than not this spoils the whole presentation of the monitor. Overall the monitor with its polished bezel, toughened plastic and hidden speaker grill projects an image of a tough reliable product.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago as a second screen for my laptop. It is brilliant. Less back light bleed than my mates Samsung, the glossy screen is extra sharp and the colours are brighter than any other screen I have seen. I would definitely recommend it. The speakers are a bit crap but what do you expect? As with all my other ASUS products this one is great.

Check out the Dell LCDs now, they have gone very affordable in the last week or so. No way someone would buy a 28k lcd which has some issues here and there
