Fly SX240

Light and easy to carry
Feature-packed
Poor reception
Sluggish UI
T9 not so adaptive
Bad battery life

The UK-based Meridian Mobile Group has finally jumped into the fray with its Fly series of mobiles, and plans to sell 2.5 lakh phones in its first year of operation.

But this was some time ago. Whether MMG was able to spruce up its sales figures is a matter known only to the company. However, we got its first handset for review last week.

The Fly SX240 is a clamshell phone, incredibly light and comfortable to hold. It measures 96.3 x 51 x 13.5 mm and weighs 88g. However, on the face of it I saw nothing that could get me worked up.

The Fly has a nice rubberized exterior, which prevents fingerprints and scratches. One second thoughts, I daresay the design sort of picks off from the Motorola V8, what with the external screen aided by three buttons to control the music player while the phone is shut.

The hinges don’t feel very sturdy. I hate it when the joints creak, though I don’t mind it when I've had the phone for a long time. But this, dear friends, happens to be a brand new piece.

The camera is placed on the front panel, just above the screen.

Either side is void of anything save the proprietary USB/headphone jack and the volume keys on the left and the camera button on the right. If you are wondering as to the whereabouts of the memory slot, just flip the phone open...

Don’t see it? See the ridge right above the words “Fly”? Yeah! That’s right, that’s the slot. Could make a nice party hide-and-seek game, eh? It supports up to 2GB, and uses a MicroSD card.

Think it's cool? Think again, because to accommodate the hot-swap slot the company had to keep the earpiece on the two sides of the slot. This is sad! Placing your ear in the middle kills the sound and will make you strain a little harder to hear.

The internal screen is a TFT 240 x 320 that can display up to 262K pixels, while the external screen measures 128 x 128 with an equal pixel display capacity.
