Acer Aspire 5920
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Feb 13, 2008
Sturdy build
Sober design
Great LCD panel
Smaller native resolution of LCD panel
Underpowered specifications

Acer has been on a roll of late, with its revamped Gemstone series of laptops giving some serious competition to market leader Dell. Its Aspire 4520 – which we reviewed not so long ago – was one such model that shone as one of the best products of 2007. Well, the line has now been refreshed, and one of the newly introduced models is the Acer 5920, which is aimed as a multimedia laptop. Does it live up to the standards set by the 4520? Let's find out...

After tasting success with its earlier models, Acer has kept the basic shape and color scheme of the 5920 more or less unchanged. The 5920 sports a dark lid and follows the same beige-cream white finish seen in the 4520. The softly rounded contours of the 5920 are also similar to the 4520, along with the pleasant matte finish for the keyboard area and a glossy finish for the lid. The construction is sturdy, with no audible squeaks or whistles resulting from daily use.

However, that’s where the similarities end. Since the 5920 is a 15-inch model, some allowances have been made with regard to its larger size and the segment it’s aimed at. The keyboard area of the 5920 is surprisingly large and has well-designed keys that are much smoother and easier to type on than those from other manufacturers.

The sides of the keyboard area on either side sport a series of one-touch buttons for functions such as enabling Bluetooth radio and FF/Rewind for the media player. The touchpad is also well designed – though I found it a little too big, it was well-contoured and allowed for easy mouse tracking.

neelabh @ Jun 30, 2008
I'd like to mention one irritant. While customizing the laptop, Acer seems to have gone overboard with software – a fair bit of crapware comes installed with the laptop and had to be removed to allow better customization. Acer should offer the option of a light install that does not come with so many unnecessary programs.

Very true and I agree! But it would be nice if you noted which warez were 'crap'! For my part, it was the Acer Empowering software.

So, I bought the same laptop (yes with the X3100 GMA) preinstalled with the crappy version of Linux and did a clean install of XP Pro, which I customized to my heart's content!

Result? I have a slick machine! I would not corrupt this machine with Vista (of any flavour)...and yes...the Bluetooth does work!
kristalsoldier @ Apr 11, 2008
I have heard that some that bluetooth does not work in this model even though bluetooth key is given
Devesh @ Apr 07, 2008
Hi friendz..i just bought acer 5920 laptop, n found it realy cool in luk n performence..specially coz it offering brilliant specification n bundles of new gud features like multimedia touch pad like lenovo is offering in its y510serier(but it is costly)..and easy launch buttons for browser ,bluetooth.etc. N all dis at realy relatively less price dat is 35k..n other brand wid dis confgtn u may get at 44k to 55 k.so i can say it is best value for money. Beside,I also encountered sum common prblm like ejecting dvd rom, while using usb mouse, may create a prblm, the lcd lock is having a cam fitted in build dat may make u quite uncomfortable while opening a LCD screen, u wont find empowering techlgy tool easy to use wid window xp coz acer recommends window vista. N vista having various disadvantage like making system slow, not supporting various software etc so i preffered to hav xp for my 5920..so gettin problem in using its E TECHNLY tools, at last besides its various disadvantage its advantages havin much more weightege. N other laptop brand may hav more disadvantage then acer n u wud never like to expreince such disadvantage at higher price. So i can say its da best. Overall satisfaction!!!

I bought this for 39.5 yesterday from croma and the dealer assured me that its the best price. After reading this i feel bad of not having done my homework.
Prash @ Mar 31, 2008
Great review Jayesh! Can you please give me the URL to your review of the Acer 4520 model? Also can you please review the 4720 and 4720z models? Thanks!

I was wondering if my Aspire 5920G had blurtooth. It has the button, it was advertised, but everytime I try to hook it up or enable it I cannot seem to get it to work. I looked in the control panel and cannot seem to find anything that works.
Michael Robison @ Mar 03, 2008
design is very nice, but specifications are not clear
uttam ganguli @ Feb 29, 2008
how can I get higher
processor in this laptop
sachin singh @ Feb 24, 2008
Hai,
How do i get higher processor in this mechine
Acer's site does not offer any customization online.
sachin @ Feb 20, 2008
Dell allows U to return the laptop in case U are not satisfied- the only company which does this!!
vijay @ Feb 20, 2008
Acer Gem Series has best design layout i have ever come across. Battery life is not so excellent, rest otherwise the products are good and runs in good health.

On customization point, even i am unhappy that Dell is the only one and no competitors. I personally don;t like DELL for only one reason, you can;t touch or feel the product unless you buy. So there are 100% chances that product you see online(look and feel, color etc) is different then actual. Better not to deal rather then burning hands and loose money.

Beter to see product, touch , feel it and then purchase, after all you are paying amount > 40K
Jignesh @ Feb 16, 2008
You cannot customize. Dell is only one in India or World, which allows full customization. Acer, HP compared to dell are small companies which cannot offer customization.

More over acer sell only those machines in india which are flop in europe. so you understand what i mean.

That's the reason they need Rithek Roshan as brand ambassador to make thier scrap run in the market...
Vinod Ahuja @ Feb 16, 2008
Hey friends, i bought this lappy today. its quite good and sturdy and also gives one of the best vfm. its one of the few available in the market with 2 gigs of ram!!!!
