BenQ To Debut Blu-Ray Writer in August

04 Jul, 2006, 2:00 pm IST | Jayesh Mansukhani | Optical drives

BenQ a leading computer equipment manufacturer has unveiled an optical disk writer that can handle the new Blu-ray DVD storage format. The device will sell for about 799 euros ($1,022) beginning in August. The timing is terrific as a late-August launch would place BenQ among the first companies to have shipped a Blu-Ray writer and would put it in competition against releases from Blu-ray advocates like Sony, Pioneer and Philips. At 799 euros, including VAT, the BenQ machine is priced quite cheaply for a first-generation Blu-ray disk recorder. Though 800 euros is not chickenfeed comparing the fact that Benq's competitors will be priced at up to $1,800, the entry price point is brilliant.
