Verbatim Corporation has announced that it will start shipping dual-layer HD DVD-R writable discs in North America as soon as hardware capable of writing to those discs becomes available.

The single-sided, dual-layer discs will offer 30 GB of capacity to the users, enabling the storage of around 150 minutes of high-quality, high-definition video. The discs also support AACS copy protection for commercial content storage.

HD DVD-R discs have already been available in Japan since the middle of last year, following the availability of HD DVD recorders in the country.
