S Korea to Block Porn Websites Soon

26 Mar, 2007, 1:00 pm IST | Priyanka Pradhan | Windows

South Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication is reportedly seeking the possibility of blocking all foreign pornographic Web sites in the country.

Ministry official, Suh Byung-jo told the Korea Times that the government group Friday asked national fixed-line servers to investigate the matter further and determine if these sites should be blocked to protect the nation's youth.

Suh's remarks came a week after several pornographic clips were made available on sites like Yahoo! Korea and were allegedly downloaded by tens of thousands of citizens, including minors. Daum, the second-largest portal site, also carried an audio-visual file of partially nude foreign fashion models, which was left for approximately seven hours last Tuesday.

Suh said that while such an effort could be costly in terms of both, money and Internet connection speeds, the ability to block offending sites would be worth it. The ministry has reportedly stated that it is set to deny access to porn sites based overseas, with details to be unveiled early next week.
