Wikipedia Edits Its Policy

| Wikipedia has made its ‘Anyone can edit' feature more exclusive, by refashioning it to give volunteer administrators the authority to exercise editorial control, delete unsuitable articles and protect selected articles. The articles on Wikipedia are now divided into three categories: Protected articles, semi-protected articles and free edit articles. The list of protected items changes rapidly for reasons of repeated vandalism or disputes over certain topics. Wikipedia's founder, Jimmy Wales said that the protection is usually temporary and affects a tiny fraction of the 1.2 million entries on the English-language site. He defended the recent move criticized on grounds of taking charge of editorial control saying, “Protection is a tool for quality control, but it hardly defines Wikipedia. What does define Wikipedia is the volunteer community and the open participation." In a bid to protect the site from vandalism, the administrators have now made some entries like articles on US President George Bush, China and Iraq permanently inaccessible for free edit. |
