Nvidia announces 3D Vision 2, promises brighter pictures, less dorky look

Although 3D in televisions hasn’t really taken off the way everyone thought it would, Nvidia has managed to successfully capture the 3D segment in the PC industry when they launched their 3D Vision wireless glasses three years back. Yes, they were expensive at that time and we just had two monitors that supported it, but it was a sign of progress nonetheless. One of the main problems was the reduced brightness levels in games due to the active shutter glasses. All this could be a thing of the past with their newly introduced 3D Vision 2 wireless glasses kit. The redesigned glasses feature 20 percent larger lenses for a larger viewing area and less light leakage. The 3D kit should go on sale this month for a price of US $149 or $99 for just the glasses.

Along with 3D Vision 2 glasses, we’ll soon see third generation 3D Vision panels in monitors and notebooks designed specifically for the new kit. One of the new technologies will be Nvidia 3D LightBoost, which will be present in any monitor that’s 3D Vision 2 certified. It involves an LED backlight which burns almost twice as brightly thereby giving you roughly 30 percent brighter picture. The glasses will also be compatible with existing 3D monitors. Asus will be the first monitor to hit stores with this new technology. The VG278H is a 27-inch LED Full HD monitor which supports DVI, HDMI 1.4a and features an integrated IR emitter. The monitor will come bundled with Nvidia’s new glasses as well. The first notebooks to support this are the Toshiba Qosmio X770/X775 and Satellite P770/775.

There’s still no official word from Nvidia when they’ll be launching it in India but like most hardware launches, expect a small delay.
