Redesigned Apple sync cable appears online

Ever since the rumours of the iPhone 5 emerged, there has been a lot of talks surrounding the new dock connector. The reason for this is because it will be the first time Apple will change the dock connector since they launched the first iPod. This bit of information has stirred the Internet and since the first time the news of the redesigned dock connector surfaced, the component has received as much interest as the upcoming iPhone. A recent report by iLounge has now got access to Apple’s future sync cable, giving us a preview of what it is expected to look like once unveiled.

As per the report, the author Charles Starrett states, “The cable appears to be highly similar to past Apple cables, with a full-sized USB plug on one end and what appears to be Apple’s newly shrunken 8-pin connector on the other.” He goes on to add, “It is unclear whether the part shown is a replacement cable or a genuine Apple part with pre-production markings.”

This is the first time that the cable has been snapped and if all the rumours of a smaller dock connector happens to be true, then we can certainly expect this to be the real deal.

Recent reports have indicated that the new dock connector will have an 8-pin configuration and not a 16 or 18-pin connector, as previously believed. The original dock connector contained 30 pins and reports of 16 or 19-pin connectors seemed hard to square with the port’s small size and Apple’s actual need for additional pins. The new connector will feature other design innovations and will potentially include the ability to connect with docks or cables in either orientation, much like the case with the MagSafe power connector found on Apple’s Mac range of laptops.

The next iPhone is expected to feature a major design overhaul and is said to be much bigger, measuring 58.47 mm wide, 123.83 mm high and 7.6 mm thin with a 4-inch display. As previous reports have indicated, the headphone jack will also be relocated, with it being moved from the top of the iPhone to the bottom. Reports also suggest that the size of the dock has been reduced drastically and is similar to the size of a microUSB. This last bit fits in line with the fact that the redesigned dock connector will not feature the traditional 30-pin configuration.

These leaks regarding this year’s iPhone appear to be happening on a consistent basis and the arrangement of external as well as internal components have been captured. However, nothing is confirmed yet. And with Apple expected to unveil the next iPhone on September 12, more details will be known on or before that date.
